On RPG's where you have certain save points, like FF, I save whenever I can because you never know when the next save point will be. However in other games I don't bother saving much until I do quite a bit and start getting paranoid about a powercut, or until I stop playing.

I use quicksave more than magic in oblivion. scenario, I have one lockpick. I need to get through a very hard door. Just Save, click auto attempt, quickload if it fails.

Most games I play have autosave, so I don't really bother with it myself unless it's like, "Would you like to save now?" "Yeah, game. Why not?"
If it's a difficult game, I save every chance I get so I can load the last thing I didn't royally screw up...which happens a lot in Silent Hill: Homecoming.

That's pretty much how I do it too. But if it's a game where you have to choose to save, I usually don't do it unless I'm either ready to turn it off or something is happening (storm, etc.) that could end up making the last few hours I spent playing a waste of time.

Generally i make it a rule for myself to save as often as possible because i never know when i'll just have to get up and go during a big boss battle or a real important plot point. I make it an even bigger point to wait until the saving is completely done and "saving complete" pops up on the screen or a similar phrase. many a times where i've had to start over have happened due to me turning my system off to hastily

The autosave in ME2 is so prevalent that I only saved when I reached a quitting point. In games like Oblivion, however, I save, save, and save like a lunatic.

On Mass Effect I pretty much saved after every few steps. Dunno why, I played on casual so it was hard as hell to die.

Now if its something like Half Life two, where maintaing health is involved, I like to save when I'm well stocked on health and ammo, dont want to try and take out ten dudes on 8 health.

pc games i use Auto save when i'm experimenting (trying to use different techniques to accomplish a goal or trying to do something cool) and then i save when i hit a save point. I always feel guilty about pressing f7 though doing those quick loads because i think: if i was a real gamer i would only save when i'm suppost to save so i can have bragging right and become a beter gamer. console games it depends. A JRPG i will level grind for about 2-3hours then save in the next area because of my motto: "it's not a "real" kill unless its an "OVER"kill. (over kill to me involves either killing an enemy with 3-500 point over there hp or beating a enemy into submission and finish it off with some special combo that would normally take half or 75-100 percent of its health away, or just keep juggling the enemy after it's dead.

In terms of Bioware games I just save fairly often out of habit, but more frequently depending on how difficult that part of the game is.

Same, with Bioware. In fact, when I play Dragon Age Origins I save after every single battle. Most games I save often, but not as much as I do when playing Bioware games.

Dependins on the game. If it's got an autosave, I'll let it take care of 90% of my saving. It there's a quicksave option, that'll take up 60% of my saving.

That said, I save a lot, but sometimes, I'll forget. This always happens during a crucial moment. (For example, in Fallout 3, I got the Firelance, and immediately after, I was mauled by a Yao Guai. No save there. I cried. Now, when wandering the wasteland, I'll hum "Maybe", thinking about the Firelance.)

I used to be save crazy until games starting coming out with automatic saves. Now I save a lot less, but on PC games like Neverwinter Nights all the time.

FPS - Everytime I get to 100% Health and Armor.
RTS - After advancing an age, or creating a massive army.
JRPG - Where-ever I see a save sphere/crystal/computer/ect

Uhm when I am finished playing a game. It autosaves when it pleases though, so I don;t know.
