Since they'll be blasting off at the speed of light to extend our reach to the stars above, Jessie and James.

I would absolutely never name one after Lucas. He accidentally had a few good ideas that time, technology, and budget wouldn't allow him to ruin.

Roddenberry's not bad, but I feel like he'd rather it to be called the Enterprise (perhaps with some letter designation).

Flying Dutchman wouldn't be bad either.

It really depends on -who- sends them, but I'll go with the English world:
1. Endeavour
2. Santa Maria

They both explored, founded and settled lands around Earth and it would give the ships a name to live up to

EVE? I've never played it, did I make an accidental reference?

I went with Ares and Athena because they are opposites and just fit and sound nice together. Nyx is the titan of darkness and Styx is the dark river. Huginn and Muninn not because they sound cool but because of the symbolism. They are Odin's ravens, his messengers and spies I thought it fitting that the space ships were named after them. Odin being chief among the Aesir and they being his messengers and spies its like a veiled threat, a declaration of status and a statement about human life being dominant on it's planet all in one.

Were I going for cool Norse references I'd go with Tyr and Thor or Loki and Hel.
Ares, Nyx, Huginn, and Muninn are all EVE ships.

Now that I think about it, I would rather have a ship named after a force, entity, or creature, then a person, or anthropomorphic god. Cause then it seems like you're inside of them. You'd get endless jokes like: hey, I'm inside of Athena *snicker

Well you could go with the Ishimura and then change the second one to the Event Horizen. What would go wrong with both of those classy names? :D
Yes, what could possibly go wrong? You could paint giant targets on the sides of the ships too.

Lucas lost that right after ruining what he built.

But I digress.

My two ships would be...

"Dwagon", and "Sabril"

They would probably be named something by a NASA/ESA committee. This was how the Ranger, Surveyor, Apollo, Voyager, Viking, Mariner and Pathfinder programs all were named. The Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity however were named by an international essay competition.

Fair game for naming conventions are anything of old myth associated with ancient astronomy, cool modern science buzzwords like Millennium, or contrived [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MESSENGER] retronyms [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.O.L.B.E.R.T.].
You know the people at NASA will try their damndist to call at least one The Enterprise.

Or maybe "Bill" and "Ted"...
Oh, god, yes. This is the best idea.

But, if those naming them hated fun and decided that those names were not appropriate, how about the S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, after one of the most awesome men to ever live, and Serenity, because I'm a rabid Firefly fanboy.

Say that two space-ships have now been built to explore the galaxy, and are waiting to be named. What would you call them? I realise the success of this thread is probably related to the amount of sci-fi fans on the Escapist, but I'm sure there's a few.

For me, they'd be the Roddenberry and Lucas, for obvious reasons. How about you?
I can agree on Roddenberry. Not so much Lucas. (Roddenberry was actually interested in space flight. Lucas just wanted "space samurai")

For me, I'd name the two space craft "Sagan" and "Clark". After Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clarke. Two of the finest science fiction writers in history as well as firm advocates and active members of the worlds space flight and exploration programs throughout much of their lives.

I'd name one Queen Anne's Revenge. (famous ship of BlackBeard)

The other is The Flying Dutchman. (mysterious "ghost ship" in nautical folklore)

All that's left is to hope they won't (will?) be the first space pirates!

Righty and Lefty.

or Pinky and the Brain

Or Memphis and Dilbert.

Personally, Garfield and Plurralbles would be awesome.

Also... Ramses and Arbiter
