Thanks going to get them now ;P

I absolutely crapped myself in FEAR (when I used to have it) especially near the end when you spin round and the little girl is there.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is great, and it's short enough you can beat it in one night, thats what I did.

The original Alone in the Dark (1992). Very scary, Lovecraft-themed mystery/horror. The sequels never quite reached the same quality for me.

Yeah well Reviews aren't always true.

OT: AVP2 AVP2 AVP2 AVP2. Play the Marine Campaign in the darkness, at night. You will crap your pants. Balancing is an issue but if you want scary, play as the Marine.

The Penumbra series.
Seconded. Beautifully atmospheric and really, really crazy scary. Does such a good job of just really getting underneath your skin.

And for what it's worth, though not a survival horror techinically, Bioshock 1 is pretty heebyjeeby. Especially near the beginning before the gloss wears off and you know what to expect.

And, Doom 3, but again really only in the first half before you start gunning demons down every three seconds. Before it turns to a true shooter in the later part of the game, it's really a good scarer.

Condemned 1&2.

If you scare easily you probably wont last long.

Noes, unfortunately.

Not particularly a horror game, but Starbreeze's the Darkness can get pretty creepy at times.
Neither is this.

OT: There is this indie game called The Path available on Steam. It's supposed to be pretty good and the trailers look scary alright, but I haven't played that myself so I can't tell.

Wait for Metro 2033 (released in a few days).

I can tell already that its going to fuck me up in the middle of the day; there's not a chance I'll play it at night!

The path is very atmospheric, but I can't say I found it scary.

Not full games, but sections of games, the orphanage in Thief 3 and the hotel in VTM:Bloodlines scared the crap out of me when I first played them.

Are you thinking of the newest game? Since I think they are refering to the Monolith game that was released in 2001. The expansion Primal Hunt wasn't all that good but the original game was fantastic. Indeed the multiplayer can still hold it's own against today's shooters.
