Wait for Metro 2033 (released in a few days).

I can tell already that its going to fuck me up in the middle of the day; there's not a chance I'll play it at night!
As a massive S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan I'm so badly looking forward to this.

Jimminy cricket! I actually had to stop watching. Now I'll get no sleep...
And you just watched it :p

Try playing it with no prior warning about what was to come at 2 in the morning on a rainy night with no lights on.

Then guess how much sleep I got :p

If you can get yourself a copy I highly recommend it, although it is a very buggy game.
True, but you can get some patches from their main site that corrects many of those plus adds in some interesting features that the devs never got around to putting in.

OT: Like everyone else on this page I heartily recommend VTM also I'm Not Alone is pretty good from steam except the voice acting...oh god the voice acting.

the first time you play F.E.A.R, that game, scary. Its dark in the room, you got the headphones on connected to the tv. That game made me jump more than a couple times.

Let me just mention: Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corner Of The Earth generally doesn't work. It's too glitch and bug filled to be fun.

I'd be tempted towards S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call Of Pripyat. May not be the scariest game around (even if it scared me more than most games tend to do these days), but it is fun.

yeah, i agree with everyone else on bioshock, condemned uno and dos, but yeah F.E.A.R. one and two are pretty great at that if you haven't learned every freaky part, but its easy to predict i found out so yeah.

I can't believe I forgot Dark Corners! That game was psychological scares all round! And managing not only your physical health but your mental wellbeing made for some great gameplay!
I concur, is till have not beat the game cause it gets me jittery. The hotel escape I never could get past, and after my first real try (Read: The one where I didn't get raped horribly) I had to take a break cause of the adrenaline dump. The break continues to this day.

And because I was reminded of it by an article on this site, the starting of the Suffering had some good moments as well... and then the rest of the game failed to match that.

I can't wait for it either - never taken a look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. before though as I heard the last 2 games suffered a lot of bugs, although I hear the third doesn't have a lot of that.

Skip Clear sky, it's based much more on gunfights then anything else, Shadow of Chenobyl and Call of Pripyat on the other hand are amazing. Two of the most atmospheric FPS's you'll ever play.
On the subject of Metro2033 though, just found the 'optimum requirements' on steam:

Processor: Core i7 CPU
Memory: 8GB RAM or higher
Graphics: NVIDIA DirectX 11 compliant graphics card (GeForce GTX 480 and 470)
DirectX®: DirectX 11

What the holy crap is it going to do with 8gb ram?! Let alone an unreleased 400 series...

Bleh, given how PC-focused they seem to have been with it the recommended/minimum should still be equal to or above the console settings. I wouldn't worry.

Penumbra series.

Put on your headphones, lower the gamma so you can only see with a light source and turn off the lights.

Prepare to shit bricks.

Try Call of Cthulhu. It relies more on making you tense and psychological fuckery than it does on the monster closets out dead space or doom 3, thus it gets my respect more.

ANY game can be scary if it's barely lit and things literally spawn into existence without warning, but it takes a master of atmosphere to creep you out.

This is the mark of a horribly, horribly unoptimized game. Unsurprisingly, STALKER was unoptimized as well. In fact, I notice a lot of Eastern European games run like absolute shit, what's the deal with that?

My guess would be a relatively low budget, although Call of Pripyat has fairly solid FPS for me it does have a habit of stuttering.

The minimum is up to an 8800 now, recommended at 260, they're starting to pull ahead of the console limits gradually (also what's with all the nvidia cards, it's almost like they've been paid off by them...).

We'll see - with such requirements performance is bound to be mentioned in any reviews anyway.
