Barbie for the PS1. Genuinely horrified me.... :D

Dickery aside, I'd say Silent Hill 3. I can't remember Silent Hill 1 and 2 cause I haven't played them in so long, so it's gotta be 3. Also for some reason I find Resident Evil: Survivor scary. The whole thing has an atmosphere of unfamiliarity, along with tense music, and the fact that it's first person. No idea why tbf. RE:3 had it for me too. Any part in the game with a smashing window, a guttural "STARS" and thudding footsteps warranted a pause and a change of underwear.

I have to agree with Eternal Darkness, it took 4 people who have played the Fatal Frame, Silent hill and Clocktower games and made them scream and throw pillows at the TV.

The random, little touches like using a healing item and them blowing up instead of healing then SNAP your character is back, nothing happened, but they keep muttering and freaking out. Or running along only to watch your character sink into teh ground and die being buried alive, or eaten by scopions, then SNAP, nothing happened. You never could quite trust what you were seeing and that is real horror to me

Silent Hill 2, for the disturbing atmosphere and the messed up psychological monsters.

The Condemned series was also pretty spooky in a lot of parts. I'm always going to have fond memories of all of my friends screaming in my living room during the Condemned 2 bear level.

I've said it a million times, I'll say it again.

Get the original Half-life off of Steam for $10, hop onto ModDB, and download Afraid of Monsters: Directors Cut.

It has the best atmosphere I've seen, has scares both psychological and surprising, and it will stay with you for a LONG time after you are done with it.

For the love of god, someone say I'm not the only one who has played it here.

I dunno about scariest game ever but The Condemned really did tap into the fear and anxiety that kind of situation would cause.

The gasping sound and the music that plays when those damned Regenerators appear on Resident Evil 4 will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Listen for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUKGRzzdUgs&feature=related (gasping sound)

It depends on which kind of scare.

For jump out scares, Aliens Versus Predator 2, Condemned and Resident Evil 4 are definitely up there.

In terms of pure, crushing atmosphere, System Shock 2, STALKER (any of them) and Eternal Darkness are my choices.

I think out of all of those, Eternal Darkness scared me the most. Very unsettling, constantly.
Second.

ED is the only game I've played that involved you in a psychological way, completely breaking the fourth wall and totally mind****** you. Other games don't come close, although they can be scary.

The Suffering Prison is Hell

It wasn't the monsters in it, or the jump scares that were the most disturbing. It was the scenes where you saw the flash backs of the protaginist's family.

The PC version was made available as freeware if anyone wants it. Plus the x Box version is backwards compatible with the 360.

The nightmare room in Psychonaughts freaked me out pretty bad... I can handle any horror game but when something that dark comes from such a light-hearted game it just catches you off-guard and you feel dirty for the rest of the day.

for those of you who don't know: In Mila's level you can find a secret room with a vault outside, she will tell you to come back to the party "that rooms a real mood killer" the vault shows how the children Mila babysat (or possibly her own... but I doubt it) were all killed in a fire. there is also a hole in the room, when you enter it you wind up in a hellish prison with several emotional demons all screaming (at once) things like "it burns" "please help us, it hurts" and "MILA WHY DID YOU LET US DIIIE?".. it always creeps me out.

My original suggestion: Aliens [http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/reviews/view.php%3Fid%3D6] for Commodore 64. The motion scanner, the limited movement, and the finite ammo are the key to this one.

Another vote for: System Shock 2 and Condemned.

Another vote against: Dead Space, I bought this because after the disappointment of Bioshock I had heard that this was the "Real" spiritual successor to System Shock. Sure it had a couple of moments but no real oppressive enduring horror. In fact the ghost house section of VtMB was scarier. In fact the only really scary thing about Dead Space was how awful the PC port was.

Oh noes its a big gory looking deformed monster thing looking angry! How many times before have I seen that? Please...

What's scarier is what you don't see.

Compromise: If you didn't see this guy coming, he'd be pretty damn scary.
