Silent Hill's 1-3 are scary. Especially if you play them in the dark. All alone. Fatal frame is also scary because you are only armed with a camera and your character can't run.

Honestly, I've never been scared in a video game. I guess the idea that I will just respawn a few feet away takes away the fear~factor.

I looooove survival horror. So much to choose, but I think it would have to be Fatal Frame since the ghosts come up through the floorboards and doors, fading in and out. Unlike resident evil games where you can slam a door in a zombie's face and foil it. The doll room always creeps me out.

Normally... I System shock 2. but not today. today...
Why not today?
Because Majoras mask...

seriously? system shock scared the shit out of me...

but I found MM to be just unadulterated nightmare fuel. and its a kids game.

Again, I demand nintendo make a horror game. and not tell us until we are already playing. It will be infinitely awesome.

Bioshock when played in the very early hours of the morning in pitch black all on your own can be very damn scary. Especially if you can have the volume turned up very high to hear all of the little sound affects that will scare the crap out of you.

Fatal Frame, man. By far.
No other game has even come close in terms of atmosphere and spooky scares. Silent Hill 2 tends to be called atmospheric but really I just don't feel it...
Grab hold of Fatal Frame and you'll see just how hostile an empty place can be. Especially that part early on with the hanged man...christ, gives me the shakes.

I feel the need to say fucksake but you're new here so I'll let you off with posting another scariest games thread.

Bioshock. Right from the beginning it created an eerie atmosphere that built up till the very mention of the game makes you shit it. The use of light and sound was incredible and may be one of the main reasons for its atmosphere. Some of the sections in Medical Pavillion and Fort Frolic left me out of breath I got that scared. This is a game that never lets you feel safe, it tries its very hardest to scare you and it succeeds.

Minecraft isnt scary in the same way as silent hill or what not, but try going for a midnight stroll or digging into a lava flow, the tension is awesome.

Or failing that try exploring a cave system and stumlbing on a bunch of creepers in the dark.

Are you afraid? What is it you fear? The end of your trivial existence? When the history of my glory is written, your species shall only be a footnote to my magnificence. I am SHODAN.

Yeah System Shock 2.

Siren Blood curse

Seriously, if you think Minecraft, Fallout 3, Amnesia, Eternal Darkness, Bioshock, and Dead Space is scary, you haven't seen nothing like this game.

Also project zero (fatal frame) 2 crimson Butterfly. Ghosts coming out of nowhere and scarring the living shit out of you, fuck this game, i couldn't even play it for more than five minutes without shitting bricks in my pants.

You can have your monsters, and abominations, and blood dripping on the walls, but you can never beat a bunch of ghosts in the "making you piss yourself scared!" factor.

Hmm...

I can't finish the Amnesia demo because I can't stop shaking.

The Cradle on Thief 3 scared the FUCK out of me. It wasnt as bad as it could have been, because my mate always told me about it, so I ran around the first bit without any fear of being seen because I knew no-one was there. But his description of the inmates in the second bit stayed with me, and I dreaded getting to them.

I don't know if theyre dead or not!!!! And the noise... the noise....

...Ahem...

Fallout 3, running through a mirelurk infested subway with no ammo, no stimpacks and being level 3.

Too me, ether Dead Space 1 (I can't beat it to this day. I huddle in the corner and cry) Amnesia Dark Decent, or Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill 3 is a close second as well. Dead Space 2 is thrown in there for making me scream.

But if were also going for Tense, Heavy Rain was some tense ass game.
