Most of us are familiar with the unofficially crowned scariest game ever, which is Amnesia. I have however stumbled across a game EVEN more terrifying. It's a Half Life 2 mod called Nightmare House 2 [http://nh2.wecreatestuff.com/], I would assume a lot of you are in the possession of Half Life 2 on Steam, in which case you can download it and go ahead and poop your pants for free.

I'm really quite serious in that this is the scariest game that I have ever played. Though it has a lot of cheap scares, it does blend in really well with the claustrophobic and hostile atmosphere that it sets.

If you think you know a scarier game, go ahead and tell me in the comments.

EDIT: Oke, about Amnesia. I'm not easily scared and Amnesia barely scared me, it had some stuff. But it lost it's touch of adrenaline so fast for me, the horror rush was gone after my first encounter with the grunt. Then it became almost like a minecraft creeper, provoking it and when he nearly gets you just outrun him again. For me Amnesia was a scary scavenger hunt, I play these kind of games for the thrill of being scared and Amnesia just wasn't scary.

Anyone who doesn't say Amnesia, has never played Amnesia.

Though once I get a laptop that can actually run Half Life 2 again, I'm definitely checking out that mod.

The only actual horror game I ahve ever played was Silent Hill 2, and it did a masterful job of making me poop my pants. I have heard good things about Amnesia and Half Life 2, so maybe I'll play them.

I sense Amnesia winning by a landslide here. And thats what i vote for too.

I still haven't finished it; got to the dungeon, got scared shitless and chased by a monster, had a heart attack, and then i stopped playing -__- i plan to play it.... in a brightly lit room in the middle of the day surrounded by people.

Silent Hill 3 actually makes you feel extra vulnerable because you play as a timid young girl, genius right there! Yeah, that game makes a little poo come out
Also Condemned: Criminal Origins is the jumpiest game I've ever played. It's not exactly psychological horror but it's got a great story, suspense and a lot of jumpy scary moments

I did, I did and it was a creeper if ever I played one, but I found that after some time it starts to loose it's suspense and becomes rather repetitive.

I agree with the whole repetitive-ness thing, but the first time you run into the water monster. *shudder* I evacuated my bowels in a most ungentlemanly manner.

Amnesia Dark Descent probably deserves that title. It really gets your heart pounding. I'm too scared to actually play through it.

Silent Hill 2 however creates a much deeper horror experience. It doesn't scare the shit out of you every 2 minutes, but it really messes with your psyche.

amnesia the dark descent is the most scariest game EVER. PERIOD. almost nothing can compare to the fear induced by this game.

it's been known to make men literally cry for their mothers.

I've played Amnesia and I was very disappointed. You could always tell if the monster was near (the music is a dead giveaway), and they were so easy to hide from that I felt like I was toying with it half the time. Even the "water part" that people point towards as one of the scariest points in the game was incredibly transparent, and I could straight up outrun the monster. The only reason why I even bothered staying on the platforms was because I felt that I was cheating if I didn't.

People always say that I have to get immersed, but isn't that the game's job? Even games that aren't meant to be scary become scary when you actually look at it from your own point of view and treat death like it actually matters.

I think I've played that one, some kind of murder thing in a hotel, happy family gets brutally murdered and something with a elevator shaft if I remember it correctly. It's been a while, but that game did a good job at setting my nerves to jumpy as shit that's for sure.

Played every survival horror that mattered, and some that didn't, also some mods.

Hands down: Amnesia.

Constant dread, nothing more scary then this game. Cannot bloody wait for what Frictional will brew next. :)

BTW. Anyone remembers THAT level in Thief 3? Yknow what im talking bout. ;)

Has anyone mentioned Zero yet (Fatal Frame)? I went through Zero 1,2 & 3 in Japanese so I really had to concentrate to catch the clues from the ghosts (eg if you didn't catch the distorted, ghostly 'yappari, ano kagami ga ... !' you wouldn't know a mirror was involved in the current puzzle).

And frankly, it's a game you don't want to have to keep your eyes and ears peeled *that much* in. Especially when the controller suddenly 'bbzbzzzzztt!!!' and you crap yourself.

That mod doesn't look scary...that guy just seems like a *****. Amnesia for me. But it isn't INSANELY scary, just nothing has been able to do that to me yet in a video game.

Well that would explain why you aren't scared from Amnesia, it's a type of phsycological horror, making you fear what COULD be there instead of what is actually there. From what you described, you much prefer actually seeing something scary right there in front of you, so you'd probably prefer games such as Dead Space 2, and Silent Hill.

For me, Amnesia definitly takes the cake for scary in my preferences, but Nightmare House 2 is right up behind it. Thank you Kilplix for playing that.
