Hello. I have recently taken an interest into games, which seems to have coincided with my "I Want to Be Scared" phase of teenagerhood. So, my question to you is, what is the scaries game you have ever played? And why was it so scary?

Well, as I tend to be a total wuss when it comes to horror games, I don't play too many of them.
I did play one game, however, that I thought was brilliantly done. That game... was the White Chamber!
It's basically a point and click adventure game, set in a haunted space station. The beauty of its design is the fact that not once in the game does it employ the classic "something jumps out at you" moment found in about every other horror game known to man. Even without this factor, the game manages to present an incredibly creepy and intense atmosphere throughout the few short hours of gameplay. Also, despite being a point and click adventure, it's possible to die at several points in the game, so the "I can't die so it's not scary" factor is reduced somewhat as well.
One of my favorite parts about the game is that it is freeware, so you can get all of this and more for the low, low price of free!

Portal. Not in an actual scary way, but just scary. I can't explain it, you have to play the game, and yes I know that just about everybody will disagree but my friends and I found it very "off putting" as we say.
And since you've just recently developed a taste for games I would like to take the chance to tell you the obvious but true statement that if the game is based off a movie don't get it. And I hope you "internet people" don't disagree or I'll just have to stop talking to you. All of you!

I think I know what you mean. Your character is a lab-rat, an experiment that is fighting for her life in a cold, clinical lab. It's got a Nazi-Germany, "Ve vill start ze experiment now" vibe.NickyT said:

I can fully relate to this. I got the game with orange box, I preordered, so I had no idea that the game had a plot, I thought it was all going to be like "ooh fun puzz;es" And while not genuinely scary, by the 5th or so room, I felt that something was just odd. I was freaked out a little while playing Endless Ocean at night, swimming down into the dark abyss, catching a glimpse of a huge whale, the tentacles of a giant squid... things are kind of creepy in that game when you can only see about 40 feet in front of you in the dark. Of course, it doesn't help that the game starts to play ominous music at just the right times. ;-)
FEAR creeped me out more than it should have, especially considering that the head trips couldn't really do anything bad to you.
And when I was six or so, the original NES CastleVania games scared me quite a bit. Granted, now I'm unhealthily in love with the CastleVania franchise, but seeing those 8-bit bats and skeletons and stuff was too much for my little brain.

Also, who here has played Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines. Overall, the game isn't scary, but the Ocean House Hotel level had me pissing my pants. Even worse than F.E.A.R. For those who haven't played it, check out some vids on youtube to know what i'm talking about. You're in a haunted hotel, and theres a ghost who keeps throwin shit at you, and just messing you up, and you have to crawl around in the dark, and learn more and more about the ghost, and the history of the hotel. It's so intense that when I finally made it out to fresh air, I had to just take a break and breathe.
System Shock 2 is a million times creepier/scarier than FEAR. FEAR is just a shooter, you are practically a god in that game anyway. I will admit it made me jump, but making me jump is not scary.
Scary is spending 2 minutes hiding in a room with a shotgun pointed at the door unable to go on 'in case they are out here...".
Scary is a zombie lurching towards you begging you to kill it, and saying hes sorry.
Scary is a monkey. If you never played the game that will make no sense but believe me the shriek of a monkey in the dark is scary...

Another particularly scary game is the first Alien vs Predator (not the crappy movie the original). Something about walking around a very very dark base when you KNOW everyone else (practically) is dead and the place is crawling with aliens is creepy. Even the steady click of the motion tracker is unnerving. When it starts pinging your heart rate shoots up. 5 minutes of jumping at shadows brings you to a peak and then 3 aliens sprint around the corner - sure you waste them with your pulse rifle but then you realise you burned through 50 rounds doing it an you are only carrying 4 of 5 hundred. So you pick up the incinerator, you feel a bit safer, you feel confident. Next alien you come across is gonna get a taste of flaming death. When find one you pull down the trigger and set it on fire - then you realise its still coming at you - burning and screaming.
Scary.

Just remembered STALKER is pretty scary too. Something about fighting invisible face eating monsters that take 3 shotgun blasts to drop, when you are low on ammo levels with the constant risk of a gun jamming leads to scary gameplay. Especially when there 5 of them...

In sort scary is in the tension before the shock. The shock is the release not the scary bit. The problem with FEAR is you KNOW when the shock is coming because it goes:

I heard system shock was terrifying. I still havent checked it out though. What I was dissapointed in was that BIOshock didn't really have the horror element that was promised, although the wax statues in Sander Cohens level were kinda creepy.

Silent Hill 2. The slow loading times made me lose my interest in actually playing it through, though. It takes 5 seconds for the screen to fade to the menu, 5 back. Friggin' annoying. But I guess console people are used to that (same with stuff like Guitar Hero... menu's load in not even half a second whereas it takes up to 3 friggin' seconds on the Wii, often more than 5 on the PS2 -.-)
Doom 3, even though it employs rather cheap effects (monster closets, enemies coming out of dark corners...etc) it's creepiness cannot be denied.
F.E.A.R. should get a mention too. The moment with the ladder when I encountered Alma on the top of it is creepy but when I went down and looked to my left...almost suffered an heart attack.

Yea the part where you see the newspaper article about the head found in the washing machine, and then you go into the laundry room, and the washing machine just ominously opens..*shivers*Inquisitor94 said:
