So tell me, Escapists, what are your scariest experiences in games that aren't classified as horror?
Playing Splinter Cell for the first time. I was just 11 when I discovered the meaning of "fight or flight."

Needless to say, it was very intense. Playing at night didn't help much either.

The scariest moment for me, and i will always remember it, was in the original Call of Duty. At the time, being just a kid, i hadnt played a single FPS, just because i thought i didnt have the nerve to. So, i built up my courage and started playing.

(Remember thinking "Meh, FPSs are alright, but just not my thing", and i still agree with that. Except in some cases. WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS OF VALUES!)

A few missions in, there's a part when you storm a house. After a while, i find a staircase that leads into the basement. Theres a corridor at the end of the stairs, so i look left...

AND THEN

forever etched into my memory, i turn around and there stands a german soldier looking at me with cold, pixelated eyes. I freeze. Almost immediately, the german lunges at me with his rifle, and i would probably have crapped my pants if i had anything to crap.

..sorry about that last part...

I know, it doesnt seem like much, but at the time, i was a small child, and the most brutal thing i had done in a videogame until then was spinning turtles to death with a marsupial.

Mario 64. Huge motherfucking eel. 7 years old. That is all.
I wouldn't enter any water levels for months after that. And I blame it for my developed phobia of open water.

Also: Batman Arkham Asylum. Croc's lair. At least until you realize he's easy to beat. But the buildup and atmosphere in there was just GENIUS.

Freakin crypt from Arx Fatalis. The game is regual dungeon but that tomb is most chilling place I ever seen even in a horror game. Mostly because of many zombie for who you dont have enough stakes so they keep rising behind your back and follow you while whispering "Be one of us!". Thats all in darkness unless you have Night vision spell.

God I'm such a wuss when it comes to scary. I can't watch/play anything horror at all.

LoZ: OOT - Kid link in Hyrule field at night. Hate those things that come out of the ground. Also any zombie or mummy terrified me. And the hands that drop down from the ceiling.
Super Mario World - Boos. Actually all boos scared me as a kid.

More recently...

LoZ: Twilight Princess - I won't spoil the location, but the hand that stalks you slowly when you grab the orb from them. *shudder* The music doesn't help.
Dragon Age Origins - That chant that the female dwarf sings as she slowly goes mad.

Definitely Ravenholme, in HL2. I nearly shat myself when playing that.

Granted, I was only like 10 at the time.

In a Silent Hunter game, ducking in and out between a convoy of ships while escorts are hot on your ass always gets my blood pumping.

First sighting of the first Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus. Holy hell, I jumped from the cliff, mounted Agro, and rode back to the palace faster than the cutscene could end. Took me a half hour to work up the nerve to go back. Then at the end with the fireballs from nowhere, I turned and ran again.

I guess in HL2 when the zombies would pop up ONLY when I'm not looking. Or when I found out what the burning zombie's screams sounded like if you heard them backwords.

I found the cutscene at the end of the 'Flowers for the Lady' sidequest in Red Dead Redemption absolutely terrifying. Those eyes just put the shits up me.
