I think there are plenty of scary options for women's costumes, you just have to get creative. Aethren's suggestion sounds particularly disturbing. One thing that women can pull off easier than men when it comes to horror is the fear of something that is meant to be innocent or kind and contrasting it with morbidity and terror. Silent Hill has this down really well, with both a creepy little girl and those nurses. Man, those nurses. Not many costumes can actually be scary outside of the context of the movies, games, comics, etc that they originate from, but those nurses are always terrifying to me.

How about just wear any kind of Halloween costume you like? And then when people least expect it whip out a butcher's knife and scream bloody murder? Oh, and you may have to actually swing said knife occasionally, or else you aren't going to be able to scare people.

EDIT: ^Pretty good example? Look up clips of Higurashi: When They Cry.

...or the Wicked Witch of the West. (Not Elphaba, but the one in the 1939 Wizard of Oz) Only carry something to actually scare people. ...like a butcher's knife.

The slit mouthed woman! Oh my gosh she was scary. I just watched that movie on Netflix. Easy to put together, just have to do the makeup. Disturbing pictures below.

She starts out as a woman with some sort of split personality disorder. One moment she loves her son, the next she beats him nearly to death. So when he is between 6-10 I believe she asks him to kill her with a knife before she tries to kill him again, because she thinks she'll really do it. So he tries, but she's still his mother, so he can't. He misses and slashes her face. So she comes back as a spirit that kidnaps children and slits their mouths open in kind, then kills them.

Man creepy.

Not many scary things out there.
Also kind of depends on what kind of scary you're going for.
Do you want the whole "No matter what people will steer clear of you on the streets"
or the "I WILL FUCKING JUMP OUT AT YOU AND EAT YOU!" effect?

I found this really really good werewolf mask that actually opens its mouth when you do, you can use that and some hairy gloves and jump out at people. The mask was only about thirty bucks and really well made.

Or you can go with the classic, gory non slutty zombie. You kind of have to be good at applying make-up though. All you need are a few shades of base color, face plaster and toilet paper. You don't even need the fake wounds, that's what the plaster and toilet paper is for.

Other than that you can go for the creepy female ghost thing. Wet, mussed up long hair, ghostly features and dirty torn clothes, always hid your face and when people see you JUMP OUT AT THEM

No lie this really cute girl did that at my Halloween party and she looked scary as hell. No one hit on her that day.

Ah, yeah, stupid slutty Halloween outfits. Really weird when you can get matching "sexy" costumes for you pet dog as well. I mean, WTF?

You could just try a unisexish male costume.

Before I go google it I have to ask... that's a Japanese movie isn't it? Sounds like something the Japanese would think up :p
Absolutely. I'm a wuss and I normally don't watch scary movies, but my husband loves Japanese horror.

Boiler suit, hockey mask and chainsaw. They can all be used again, aren't slutty and have many practical uses while at the party.

Margaret Thatcher? I know she haunts my nightmares!
I think "slutty Margaret Thatcher" would hit all of the Halloween costume areas. Slutty? Check. Scary? Big check. Offensive? Check.
I'm going to second this one times a million.

Japanese horror movies are amazing. So messed up in the best way and they always seem to have really interesting back stories for their monsters.

Er, anyway, I was looking at the Halloween costumes online stores have to offer and while I couldn't find any genuinely scary ones and did find an unsettling amount of sexy versions of (seriously, Sexy Where's Waldo? wtf), I thought that if you're really looking to save time you could always get a costume that isn't meant to be scary and make it horrifying with some blood, weapons, body parts, etc. (murderous Disney character, anyone?)

It's not the most original idea in the world, but there are many ways to make it your own. That way you can both save time and add your own flair to it. Plus, you get to ruin people's childhood! Win, win, and win.

Given that Halloween is fast approaching I find myself suffering from a yearly conundrum, there are very few scary costumes for women. My options seem to be limited to ?slutty zombie?, slutty vampire? and so on. Now in the past I have made a majority of the costume myself, scouring Value Village for the odds and ends necessary to make something truly terrifying? but this year I find myself with considerably less free time on my hands and making a costume just wouldn?t be practical. I should also mention that I never wear a costume more than once, ever.

So I?m wondering if anyone knows of a place where I could find a good scary costume for a woman that isn?t too expensive?
Here you go!!!

Have you tried going as a woman in a position of power?

I can think of a good costume.

All you need is a set of false teeth and very liberal attitudes to nudity.

I'm a terrible person.

If you got some pale white makeup, dressing as a witch is always fun. Made doubly fun by the fact that I can cry on command. I've scared many'a kid with that. <3

I would just make my own or go as a carrot. I swear nothing scares kids more than veggies. *see pink Gundam* Okay... That's rather scary... *flees*
