OK so I hate scary games but I love them at the same time. I would play games such as Dead Space, Fear 2, and Bioshock if I wasn't crapping my pants every time I turned a corner. I believe that adding this scary element to a game is a good idea but the developers lose an amount of customers due to the fact that there scary, ex. me. So I would like to know if there is any of you who would play these games if the scary aspect was removed or reduced.

If anything, they should make them scarier. People buy survival/horror games to be scared, so dumbing it down would be a step in the wrong direction. More likely that not, it would lose them customers.

If you heavily scared by those games never play Silent Hill 1 or 2.
Those games were fun.

Anyway op if you want a non scary game you should play fatal frame 2 crimson butterfly. It was so actiony and had only a couple "what is this warm sensation running down my leg" moments. Oh and I wish games were actually scarier.

I always liked Extermination. Why? Check this thought out.

"I'm in an Antarctic facility overrun with mutating organisms that can infect me with what they've got, my partner is fubar, the water is dangerous, and the walls are trying to eat me."

Extermination has a highly-disturbing atmosphere.

Man, if you found FEAR 2 scary, you'd be shitting yourself if you played the original, it's so much scarier, to the point that I didn't find the second one scary at all.

I loved that game! It deserved much better ratings in my opinion.

Sounds like John Carpanters The Thing...

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I think that playing a horror game without any horror elements would be like (excuse the slight pun) Pac-Man without the ghosts, a beat-the-clock game of dot-and-fruit-gobbling.

If you took Fatal Frame's scary factor out of it, you'd basically have a Myst-like endeavor where you use a camera to solve mysteries in a deserted mansion. It might still be fun, but it wouldn't be nearly as immersive without the dark and creepy atmosphere that had me jumping at every ambient noise.

Dead Space without necromorphs would be The Dig.
Fatal Frame without ghosts would be Myst IV.
Fear without Alma would be Counter Strike.
Silent Hill without Pyramid Head would be Nancy Drew: (insert game subtitle here).

To summarize, I don't think developers are alienating themselves from a potential audience by making their games scary because without horror elements, the games would simply be dishwater action/adventure affairs with probably only their narratives their sole saving grace.

I didn't find those games so much scary as I did startling.
Dead Space was a higher notch on the terror scale for me, but still not pants-crappingly-awesome.

I haven't really played a truly terrifying game yet.

Edit: I did think Bioshock was fairly scary at first, but once I got the crossbow and flamethrower, the panic was sucked out of the game.

I have The Thing game too, but I believe Extermination's a genuine survival horror. I know they're similar, but there's much more paranoia in The Thing 'cause John Carptenter helped produce that game.

Fear 2 and Dead Space aren't that scary they just rely on the loud noise/quick movement thing to scare you.

The Scariest games I played are Condemned: Criminal Origins, System Shock 2 and Doom 3

Everybody should try Penumbra: Overture.
It is a game that doesn't just startle, but is actually scary.

Generally speaking the more horror you consume the more jaded you become and the more intense an experience it takes to get a reaction out of you. How unsettling a given game is largely depends on the purpose. If your new to some of this stuff, I can see how some of the more "Tame" games can seem fairly intense.

Truthfully I think they need to make more games for the Jaded horror fan, crank that M rating up to the maxx. If the ESRB isn't throwing a fit, you aren't doing it right. :p

Overall I tend to rate the "Fatal Frame" series as the best overall, I HAD the whole trilogy but misplaced the second game somewhere, and it was arguably the strongest installment. :/

Silent Hill is a mixed bag for the most part, a lot of people like the first two primarily, me I think the most atmospheric one is the fourth one hardly anyone likes (The Room).

Resident Evil is "horror" in the sense most zombie movies are. Meaning it blurs the line between action adventure and "horror". When it first came out however, there was nothing like it. Honestly though the best "Zombie" game is probably actually Dead Rising despite some really annoying design desicians (such as a draconian time limit).

It would be nice if I could find another Rom/copy but perhaps the first horror console game was "Sweet Home" for the SNES. Never released in the US to my knowlege, a computer or so ago I actually had a translated fan-to-fan version of it.

I consider the first real "Survival Horror" game to be "The Legacy" for the PC, alas I've never gotten Dosbox to run so I could play it again, but frankly if any horror game needs to be remade for modern audiences it's "The Legacy". I used to have the special edition I picked up from Radio Shack. :)
