Whelp, I've been pre-empted right there in the OP and several times since, but I'm gonna say it anyway: Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Suffice to say, bricks were shat in short order.

Minecraft actually makes me jump a few times, when a creeper with a different texture falls into my face i jump and start bashing it with whatever is in my hand.

I dont know why youre all so scared of Amnesia, i watch my friend play it then had a go myself. Only time i even moved was when i had to hide in the wardrobe with the monster outside.
...sissies :p

Nightmare House 2.
It's not really a game, it's a mod for Half Life 2.
But it's still the scariest game I played. (Not having the balls to get Amnesia)

Project Zero II (AKA Fatal frame II) is the scariest game I own. The Japanese truly are the masters of horror.
Ninja'd. I don't usually play horror games, but I love the Project Zero series... even though I can't play them alone.. >>; GoddamnFallenWoman..

everyones already mentioned amnesia but i thought that fahrenheit or indigo prophecy or whatever was pretty creepy and edgy... up until the parts where you have mid air fist fights with supernatural cult members

Silent Hill 2 ;) The first and only game with true psychological horror.

Dead Space made me stop playing it somewhere in the middle. Uninstalled it and never touched. About Amnesia: I couldn´t even finished the demo...

The ghosts in the first Thief scared me good. I used to hide for like 20 minutes if one saw me because i was convinced they still looking for me. Thief looks kind of poo now but still well worth a play, some really scary stuff back in the day with great gameplay.

Specifically, the first level of the human campaign on Aliens Vs Predator (2010)

You have no idea how tough the Xenomorphs are going to be. You're on your own. The tension was played perfectly on that level, and before you find Tequila, all you have is a pistol.

Now, every now and then, people love a good fright, so what are the scariest games you folks have come across?
When my bother, for a joke, secretly put Barbie Horse Adventure in my console. Scariest thing ever when i turned on my console and saw that title screen come on. :-(

Eternal Darkness... In that game you didn't know if your character was mad or if it was really happening.
Oh and the bugs crawling over the screen, that added a nice effect to.

First scary moment were the ancestral tombs in Morrowind. All the ghostly whisperings can put you on edge while your creeping about robbing them.

never understood how anyone could be scared by amnesia when you can block the monster from ever seeing you with a simple crate.

as for scary, play any fatal frame game.

I think it was meant to be Catu Gurlu originally. Just watch the catgirl cult and you'll see what I mean. It makes no sense, it warps people's minds and they start following it without understanding why.

Meanwhile, original Quake was cold-sweat material the first time through when it first came out, and that Rapelay or Rapeplay or whatever it's called game is pretty much horrifying in its existence, rather than its atmosphere, sound or whatever.

Finding out that Dispell Undead doesn't work on Ancient Liches kind of wiped the smirk off my face in Daggerfall.

I suppose Angband was pretty scary if your imagination was strong enough. Finding out what Lesser Black Reavers are like and realising I'd have to get past the Greater ones to win the game wasn't fun.

The OP doesn't specify computer games. Hide And Seek ... with Slenderman?

Actually first F.E.A.R. WAS kind of scary, especially thanks to intelligent enemy soldiers and empty dark offices. I played it through 4 times (and I replayed only like 5 games ever).

God I hate what happened to the series afterwards... Anybody noticed that the meaning of the acronym F.E.A.R. lost its whole meaning after first game?
