I don't think anyone's mentioned Jaws yet.

not indy at all, but it's JAWS for crying out loud.
Any film that can give me a life long fear of the sea has to have done something right.

I like scary movies without crazy amounts of gore or zombies. Any suggestions?
Well...let's see:

Carry on Screaming (Yeh, I went there)
It, Alien, The Ring, Psycho, Arachnophobia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Gene Wilder version), The Wicker Man, The Blob, Rosemary's Baby, Eraserhead, The Devil's Backbone (Terrifying), The Fly, Jacob's Ladder, War of the Worlds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, They Live!, Quatermass and the Pit, The Shining, Carrie (the gore isn't real), The Thing.

For truly mindwarping: The Cook The Thief The Wife The Lover, Consuming Passions, A Zed and Two Noughts, Videodrome, Existenz, Naked Lunch; but these get VERY disgusting.

Yay for Lovecraftian Horrors. OOOH which reminds me: Reanimator- its fucking hilarious. Would be nice for someone to do a decent Lovecraft adapation, though on reflection, since some of them rely on unseen or hinted at horror, might be a tad difficult.
There is "To Cast a Deadly Spell"; which is bordering on excellent. Del Toro (The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth) is also rumoured to be doing "At the Mountains of Madness" in 2010; but Warner are unhappy about it not having a love story or a happy ending.

There was this really weird one as well about BDSM and sonic waves that I can't remember...

Oh and you can't really talk about unsettling Horror without the Twilight Zone; they also have some new audio's out which you can listen to here : http://www.twilightzoneradio.com/

I would really really suggest listening to "Five Characters Looking for an Exit" and seeing how long it is before you work out what's ACTUALLY happening.

*Happy dance of glee* root, i think you are my new bestest friend! lol

heres hoping Warner grows a pair and green lights it anyway.

Speaking of TV series, The Stone Tapes is a little gem, genuinely creepy, if a little too Made-in-the 70s at times

Well, Rec's excellent and not particularly gory. Candyman's really, really, really really creepy and the scariest moments have no gore at all. Apart from those and the ones that Root's recommended:

Dog Soldiers (Werewolf horror comedy a la Evil Dead. Hilarious movie.)
The Shining
The Exorcist
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Not gory at all. Seriously. It's renowned as being one of the most visually restrained, focused horror films ever made.)
Idle Hands (More of a comedy horror, but still ace. Worth watching just to see the lead singer from The Offspring getting his scalp ripped off. Plus Jessica Alba looks particularly yummy in it.)

If you want a creepy TV show then check out Jam. Tis made by Chris Morris, he of Brass Eye and The Day Today. And if you don't believe a sketch show can be scary, check this out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6p5ORHRnXs

The Shining
awesome movie

The Exorcist
great movie, tho a bit cheesy on effects

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Not gory at all. Seriously. It's renowned as being one of the most visually restrained, focused horror films ever made.)
first one is scary as hell and great, the remake with Jessica Biel was actually a pretty good remake, i do get a chance to meet Toby Hooper this summer

as for other good horror films, Teeth is good not scary but good, Inside is good but has blood, Cannibal Holocaust was pretty good, has one of the best and most iconic scenes in any horror film

i don't find a lot of movies scary, i just watch for the gore and other such stuff, so i'm bad to ask for that
