All forms of information somehow got destroyed (Books, computers, etc..), due to the world suffering from some catastrophic event, but you are able to somehow save have 5 books. What books would you save? Doesn't have to be specific down to the author, but what topics would you get?

Being the science guy I am, I choose:

Advanced Physics textbook
Advanced Chemistry textbook
CMOS textbook
Some textbook on medicine and the process of creating/developing it (I don't know much about that field)
Some book that covers on history of the world (humanities? something along those lines..we gotta know our past)

I figured books that would be beneficial to humanity would be the books that should be saved. We are creative enough to start writing fiction books so no need to save them.

Reason why I came up with this started when I was going my homework for VLSI. In the middle of it, it hit me. This textbook would be freaking great to kickstart humanity's foot in technology in the event that something catastrophic happened.

Obviously an encyclopedia, and the OED. As for the other three, one would be a definitive medical textbook, and the other two would be the largest books on science that could possibly be found.

A guide to plowing your fields
How to grow your own food
How to work with metals - scrapheap edition
Basic guide to home medical care
Weapons - a guide to tools of death
Navigation by the stars (in case the magnetic field screws up you know.)

Can probably think of more, but those are the joke books I'd like to have

Hmmm,

The Complete Works of Shakespeare
The Encyclopedia Britannica
A book about medicine (preferablly something that goes from simple to advanced)
A guide to farming
The complete Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (all 5 books in the series)
Edit: Scratch the Hitchhikers Guide, I actually want the complete writings of Stalin. Mainly becaues I'm half-way through and want to finish them.

My thinking is thus: We can rediscover all the physics and chemistry, but you can't really re-write history or great fiction. Since I can't take all of history or all of fiction I settled with the encyclopdias, Shakespeare and The Hitchhikers Guide (this ones pretty self-indulgent really)

However, it would suck if we had to rediscover farming, since only with good farming can we find other stuff.

And being ill sucks, so medicine.

A Porn Magazine.
A book covering pharmaceutics and how to manufacture them
A book covering proper construction
A book covering metallurgy
A Porn Magazine.
.
This is a list of the books I'll bring to the new world.

So long as one science text-book fully covers technology and restarting modern computing, then you have my exact list there... in fact your list is a better list to me than my old list was... damnit...

A fully functional pop-up book that allows you to use the pop-up object, like a chainsaw.
Then I'd take A Song of Ice and Fire all in one book.
The other three would be important things like science and history texts, and survival guides.
You know, boring stuff.

Plato's republic so that some collection of philosophy remains
A big book of science for obvious reasons.
An encyclopedia of some sort, maybe a print out of wikipedia?
The First Harry Potter book to give a dash of hope to the survivors of the hellish cataclysm
How to create a new civilization: for dummies.

Every book ever bound into one giant book.
Plus a hardcopy of everything on Wikipedia.

I'd save the 4 Twilight books and Justin Bieber's autobiography.
And the majority of people would then proceed to MURDER YOU.

I'd save:

The XKCD book
Bright's Passage by Josh Ritter
The Lord of the Rings (trilogy in one book) by J.R.R. Tolkien
1984 by George Orwell (just so we were reminded about how shit a world that would be)
and...
Animal Farm by George Orwell (just so we were reminded why communism DOESN'T WORK)

You'd be mad if everything on Wikipedia right now was put on a book and some 13 year old had changed the national religion of the USA to some obscure religion then everyone believed that forever.

Although there are quite a few ways that could be funny too.
