Scenes better than the movie they were in

The thread title may not make a lot of sense, but I have recently re-watched some films and there are some scenes within them that are so so much better than the overall film.

My main example would be Man Of Steel. My version of Superman in my mind is the all star superman that saves everyone and risks himself in order to save other, taking care not to break something, to break someone. With this in mind the opening scenes where Superman saves an oil rig and young clark saves a bus at the risk of his identity being revealed are fantastic.

This is then undone by one scene of pettiness (Clark taking the abuse from a guy and even having stuff thrown at him well, but then trashing a truck) and the rest of the film he just does... stuff. Not a lot of saving people, just sort of... being there and occasionally fighting (although the scenes were generally well choreographed)

So for you, what dreadful films have a stellar standout scene? The "you're tearing me apart Lisa" to it's The room, the darth maul fight to it's phantom menace etc. etc.

The tiny bit with Obi-Wan's letdown after chopping off Anakin's legs in Revenge of the Sith ("You were the chosen one!"). If the prequel movies as a whole managed to reach even that level, we might have heralded them as true Star Wars. It's the one moment where the prequels manage to reach at least some degree of the potential they had.

Continuing that trend, the Darth Maul lightsaber fight in... fuck, ninja'd by the OP. How embarrassing.

The end credits from Attack of the Clones *ba dum tss*

O-Ren Ishii's backstory and the Crazy 88 fight in Kill Bill. The former has some nice and stylish animation if nothing else, and the latter is a nice bloodbath, even if it's completely retarded in some moments. The rest of the movie is rubbish.

The final few moments of Death Proof. The movie is absolutely dreadfully horrendously hideously awful, but that bit made me chuckle quite a bit.

And while I've gotten my Tarantino bashing mode on, the scene at the end of Inglourious Basterds in the movie theatre. Nice bit of revisionist history and a good climax. The rest of the movie was so booorrirkr... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Probably order 66 in Revenge of the Sith. Also the Anakin/Obi-Wan fight vs Count Dooku. The part briefly before Anakin lost his arm felt a lot like something out of Empire Strikes Back.

The Klendathu Drop Massacre from Starship Troopers. Nothing screams popcorn munching happiness than young 20-somethings running headlong into the jaws of monstrous insect aliens and getting their legs chopped off before being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the darkness, begging for help, to be slowly devoured while their compadres fight on in blissful disregard.

The rest of the movie was an absolute shamble that made the critical and oddly common 90s mistake that Denise Richards should be wearing clothes and is here to act.
It was an odd time.

I really liked the end of Age of Ultron, where Vision and Uktron have their final meeting. The film was a wet turd, but man, that ending really impressed me.

"They're doomed."
"Yes. But a thing isn't beatiful because it lasts. It's a privilege just to be among them."

If the whole movie had been that good, maybe I would have more faith in Marvel.

The montage of Wolverine and Sabretooth fighting from the American Civil War through to Vietnam in the first Wolverine film. It's a shame the best part of the film was over in the first five minutes.

This from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-

This has got to be the only time that we ever see a softer side to Ralph and aswell a genuine love and respect for his brothers.

Well ok yes there was that small scene from the 2014 cartoon when he had a heart to heart moment with Mikey about him not having a friend and aswell that other than he deliberly exgerrated Donnie involvement to April to make him even more impressive.

Still I think this is the first version of Ralph to have this openning/ reconsile mment with his bothers.

Don't get me wrong, I like Ralph but I never get the reason to his temper other than being the angry but badass of the group character archtype.

Keegan Michael-Key in Pitch Perfect 2, aka the only time I laughed. Not even exaggerating. That movie was awful and only his select few scenes were at all enjoyable.

And while I think Ted 2 is actually a very funny movie, even if it was bad, Liam Neeson. Its rare for me to not want to spoil a joke in a movie.

I think the "Modern Love" running dance sequence in Mauvais Sang is better than the rest of the movie, even if it has a number of good performers and some interesting production design.

Yeah, that retort from Vision came out of the blue for me. I was expecting the typical 'No, they have hope, and it makes them strong' kind of BS, but instead we got a genuine insightful answer that really added to Vision's sense of wisdom.

OT: This whole sequence from Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22...

I don't have much love for the new movies, but it's impossible for me not to like this part.

Great choice- and I love watching inhuman monsters rip apart... well, almost anything.

Damn it, OP. You stole my example. Honestly, that scene in the bar with Clark just taking the guy's abuse was one of the best scenes in any Superman movie. It's just ruined because it goes on like 5 seconds too long and has Clark crucify the truck because the guy was mean to him, ruining the whole scene.

Fine, in the spirit of DC movies, in BvS we get a great moment of Batman taking down an entire building of goons. It it great, probably one of the best Batman action scenes in film. Brutal, well filmed, and makes you feel like this is Batman. It's just too bad the rest of the film is terrible. Also, it is also kind of ruined by the fact that Batman is killing people in it, too. Just try to ignore that fact, I guess.

Damn it, DC! Why can't you let me like your movies?

The Quicksilver scene set to Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle in X-Men Days of Future Past. One of the few scenes with style, panache, and a sense of humour in an otherwise morose and drawn-out borefest.

I would say every scene in batman v superman falls into this category. There are a lot of pretty ok scenes in that movie that are strung together in all the wrong places like some sort of abomination lugging its hulking body down the street. Made up of happy parts now darkened by the dim reality of its own withering mortality.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
The intro scene of the watchmen. The movie was kinda lame but that intro was fantastic, it did a great job of informing the universe.

The car chase in Amazing Spider-man 2. His new costume and awesome web-slinging were the only things I watched the movie for.

EDIT: While someone mentioned it already, mine is more specific. The "rescuing Martha" scene in BvS. Pure awesome, would've been more awesome if the film wasn't so fucking dark you couldn't tell if a thug was punched by Batman or just slipped on a banana peel.

My go-to example for this is the first Superman movie. As I believe I've mentioned in past threads, I don't have a terribly high opinion of that movie in general, and I'd always kinda been similarly dismissive towards the actors who were in it. Then I actually started paying attention to a scene in the middle where Christopher Reeve transitions on-screen from the Clark Kent persona to the Superman one, which helped to showcase just how much effort he had put into differentiating them. Seeing it laid out like that did what I'd long considered impossible: it sold the Clark Kent disguise. It really is a brilliant scene.
