You long haired fools are all screwed when the zombies attack, with my short cut hair I shall escape for freedom. Yay

Tssh, beanies are like tomato sauce for zombies, gives the brain a nice garnish. I'm sorry, but its keep the hair or survive the apocalypse, your choice.

Hmm.

I remember at school we had a strict uniform policy (with black shoes, no rings, necklaces or big earrings) and pretty much all the kids hated it. Now that I have finished school I realise how many workplaces have strict uniforms so it wasn't like "Ohh man, this school is so gay, no where else does crap like this"

So get used to following a dress code. Its not like they are saying "All boys must have bowl cuts and all girls must have long pig tails" they are giving you a choice - Tie it up or have it short. I had fairly long hair in my later years at highschool and I was quite happy to tie it up.

Bottom line

Deal with it.
They shouldn't be limiting anything you use in a job to begin with.

Touche.

however, the fact remains, that it is something employers look at.. and unless you're a crazy, albeit self-made, billionaire, there's nothing wrong with looking presentable.

That being said, I do think school should be a place for you to experiment with stuff like that.

Has to be something like that. Make the group look nice and homogeneous. I can´t think of any major disadvantage in having long hair in school.
Fire hazard?
A fire hazard, you say? Sure, why not. Yet it seems pretty improbable. It´s as possible as breaking your neck because your hair got caught in the door, or something. I have long hair, but not once has it been in danger of catching fire. Sure, it´s possible, but so is getting hit by a bus. It´s dangerous to step outside everyday, but still we´re willing to take our chances. By the way, sorry if I sound a tad offensive.

Sure, it helps make everyone look nice and helps with discipline. Yet I think it helps with bullying. It is easiest to make fun of someone's appearance. If everyone were to look the same kids would need to get to know one-another in order to insult them. Then they will most-likely find they have a lot in common, become friends, and prevent another school shooting.
Is that your argument then? Make the kids look the same and then they won't murder each other?
I understand and am very aware of that argument. Kids are a bunch of ruthless bastards who pick on anything even slightly different (personal observation.) Homogenizing them may help preventing bullying, but shouldn´t we allow those kids, with high enough self-esteem, to look whatever they like. If you don´t want to catch unwanted attention, go with the masses, otherwise appear as you please.

I'm more annoyed about the pants rules my school enforces.. Grrr.
Please explain, that sounds like fun ^^
Oh the rule is that you need to wear a pair. Apparently if everyone turned up without them it would give our school a bad name or something...

How anti-personal freedom is that?!
NO PANTS THURSDAY!
No clothes friday....nah mine went to far.

Yeah, I'm sure the schools that implement and enforce such a rule are responding to a problem rather than being preemptive. Its a cheap, though not perfect, solution to a growing problem.

Bit more info please. I assume you mean a rule that limits the length of your hair. My question is if the allowed length is different depending on gender?
well at our school no legnth restrictions for chicks, and for guys hair isn't allowed to come down to the persons collar. though they don't care as much in the sixth form, so they don't bother me with it anymore

You must wear a tie and tuck your shirt in, any particular reason? No extreme hairstyles, is that really any of the schools business? No groovy aviator sunglasses, you must be joking me...
Our school gives out 1 hr detentions for that whilst everyone else is out having sex with girls having fun.
I can cope with the tie, it looks better when my shirt is untucked.
It's not about what looks good. It's about discipline. Tucked shirts, properly-worn ties and neat haircuts should be essential. I don't care if it's uncomfortable, or if you feel it stifles your creativity.
The day I go to school in a tie, and the kind of shirt that looks decent in a tie, take them both off to go to gym (and sometimes get sweaty), and then put the tie back on for the rest of the day is the day I convert to Christianity.

never heard of anyone actually getting in trouble about their hair....

I believe its purpose was to keep up a nice school image or something or other....

Yea, it's official, my school is different than most. Where I live the bullying is because of how you act not what you wear. You think school shootings stem from clothes?

Discipline? Teens will be teens. I've known long and short haired varieties. Both groups had well behaved members, and not so well behaved members. I've gone to both extremes, myself. I've shaved and oiled my head shiny, and had hair down to just above my nipples.

School rules of the sort do nothing but stir up controversy and freedom of expression sentiments. They do more harm than good, I'd guess, but that's just my thought, not a researched opinion or provable anything.

I kid you not, I'd show up to school with a billy club.

Try giving the kid with a BILLY CLUB detention.

My school used to have rules about how to wear your hair if it was longer than a certain length.
Like, if it was longer than shoulder length it had to be tied up in a ribbon.
Fortunately for me, a year before I started at the school they stopped this rule.
I would rather cut my hair than put it up in a ribbon.
So now I can wear my hair lose, I'm quite proud of it actually, it's down to my waist now.

I think the school dress codes are a bit ridiculous. Kids should be able to wear whatever they want so long as it is not vulgar or distracting. For example girls wearing skirts that could double as belts shouldn't be allowed cause lord knows I wouldn't have payed attention to anything. Also I understand like our senior shirts were banned at our school, they said, "Chicks dig AP-ness". AP= advanced placement classes, everyone in them bought one for a good laugh. A lot of people got sent home that day.

Also speaking from experience, kids should be able to do what they want with their hair. I had to keep mine short for JROTC all the time, I hated it. As soon as I graduated I didn't cut my hair for a year and a half. It looked pretty awful before I finally cut it. Had I been allowed to grow it out in high school I'm sure my peers would've voiced how awful it was. Basically I believe high school should be a time of experimentation so that you can start 'finding who you are' earlier.

Evidently, there's rules about how long your hair can be at school. At private schools where uniforms are manditory this may not be acceptable, but for public schools where they're a little more loose on dress codes (and even the ones that aren't), if you want to look like something out of a grunge band, go ahead and do it.

We dont have one and cant imagine being introduced.
But they are rather lame, in years 9-11 your hair defines you. Years after everyone ceases to care
(at mine that is)

When I become dictator of the world, any male with overly-long hair or dyed hair goes under the razor and goes straight to a #2 haircut. I'm not joking.
Under my regime YOU get an even closer cut with a razor. To the neck.

I am joking.

But anyway, on topic my school has rules against excessively short hair. a #2 cut would acctualy be against school rules which I think is rather unfair. Strangely but luckily for me there's no rules about long hair.

If you look like a scruff-ball, get a damn haircut. Nobody thinks it's "cool", and you are doing yourself a social disservice.
