If you think school is a waste of resources wait 'till you have to deal with bureaucracy in the real world. THAT is a waste of paper.
Well in my Irish books and French books not so much Irish there are actual spelling and grammar mistakes. Good thing my French Teacher is French or those might be glossed over.conflictofinterests said:On the subject of text books, especially in college it seems, the text book makers will alter the tiniest bit of text just so that they can release a new issue and all the teachers teaching that subject will force their students to buy new books.Glademaster said:Well to take it seriously they should use computers as there is less waste although Electricity costs will go up and I am sure it won't help electrical grid by creating massive power dips when school ends as everyone logs off.
On a less serious note yes school is a waste of resources because who needs to buy all those books for all the subjects after you have already decided what you like and want to do. Can't you just study that. I will never need to know how to find poetic devices in my line of work that I want to go into or accountancy or economics possibly French, unlikely I'll need Irish, Maths and Physics yes to quite likely(haven't decided between Engineering and Computer Science yet). Although I won't need Music either.

I'm not usually a spelling/grammar Nazi, but when you're going to loudly proclaim that you're too cool for school, I'd recommend proofreading.

Thankfully, recycling is becoming more popular.
In Elementary school all courses are required because all courses assist in development.Glademaster said:Well to take it seriously they should use computers as there is less waste although Electricity costs will go up and I am sure it won't help electrical grid by creating massive power dips when school ends as everyone logs off.

Well in Ireland it is different while I do see the uses of exercising your brain we do have a fair amount of subjects to do. For the courses I want to do I am aiming for 500/600 points on my Leaving Cert. This means that they take my best six subjects when I sit my LC out of the 9 I am doing. 1 point= 1% roughly you get points for each Grade. Also to get into univerisity I need a 3[sup]rd[/sup] language and pass it and to get either a B3(B-) Ordinary level or a C3(C-) Higher level Irish. I also need to pass English and Maths or else I can't get in as well.Kagim said:In Elementary school all courses are required because all courses assist in development.Glademaster said:Well to take it seriously they should use computers as there is less waste although Electricity costs will go up and I am sure it won't help electrical grid by creating massive power dips when school ends as everyone logs off.

Math is meant to exercise your ability to recall information faster and grasp concepts quicker. There is a reason why Math is considered the purest form of knowledge. A strong grasp of math opens a significant amount of doors for you. Most importantly math is not something you can recall. Its something that requires you to problem solves. Bedmas may be simple but to study for a test on it you don't memorize every single possible application. You just memorize how to apply the basic rules to the problems at hand.
The sciences are meant to teach you the ability to apply knowledge to problems and logically work your way through anything. That's why the scientific method is repeated every single year. What you learn isn't as important as the skills practiced to learn it. That's why sciences should be taught by application, not textbooks.
English or literature studies is meant to teach you comprehension and human empathy. Books and literature are windows into the minds of others. Being able to decipher what they mean is an important skill. This allows you to understand the basic moods of those around you without having to be directly told.
Social Studies and history are meant to give you a sense of being and a practical knowledge of your past. A sign of a good social studies class is one that teaches what happens, not whether or not the actions were evil or not. Through social studies you are meant to grasp a deeper connection to the human race and your community.
In High school the applications of these courses become deeper and more career oriented. I don't know about your school but in mine grade 8-9 required all basic classes. 10 cut the gym requirement and the second language requirement. 11 required English, math and science, 12 required English. Allowing you to better define your studies.
So you see a lot of classes don;t have a basic career goal, but studying them gives you additional real world skills that are helpful if applied subtly.
