Generally, me and my friend doodle. Normally, we draw whales, or epic monkeys (Je Suis Ubermonkey [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Je+Suis+Ubermonkey] is the friend in question, and that's the epic monkey).

Whenever I start to think about Fallout 2 in French, my teacher ends up calling on me to conjugate something.

I only really drift off when she's helping one kid and isn't giving us anything else to do, so it's not like I never pay attention.

By the time I get to thinking about a really in-depth character build, we usually start moving on again, and my plan to recreate the cast of Sucker Punch falls apart.

I play songs in my head, usually Hollywood Undead songs.
I also plan out ways I can sneak looks at the girl across from me, who I see as my rival in everything.

Considering that I'm teaching the class, I have to pay attention. And I certainly hope my students are paying attention as well. I do a lot of work on my courses, and the students are paying a lot of money to be there.
That makes plenty sense. Unfortunately, my public school offers very little in the line of attention. Still worth my time, and respect to you as a teacher. Even though my mind may stray, I still know my stuff and don't waste time, unlike others at my school.
I teach at University, so if you are in my class, it is because you chose to be there--which helps with the attention situation. I also teach Music History, usually popular music of some sort...so that also helps with the attention situation. I mean, if the History of Rock and Roll is boring...I'm really doing something wrong.

But there is also another element that has to do with my teaching philosophy. I always see my classes as a two-way conversation not a one-way conversation. So if we are talking about early 90s Gangster Rap, there are some really interesting questions. Is Straight Out of Compton reflective of a society, or does it help shape it? What do you think it means that it was gangster rap that really burst through to the mainstream and that its main audience was white suburban kids? What do you think that says about suburbia? How would you compare the rise of gangster rap with the breakthrough of Elvis and rock'n'roll in the 50s? Do you think this music reinforces stereotypes or do you think it has something more to say? What does the sound of Straight out of Compton tell us about what Compton is like?

I don't have answers for these questions. There are no definitive answers. But the process of asking them and answering them helps us all expand who we are as people and how we understand the world around us. And I want to know what my students think. I want them to share their thoughts. I want them to disagree with each other and with me. I want my students to have powerful voices.

Generally, in that environment, everybody is paying attention. Me too! Because I learn as much from my students as they do from me.

There's two pairs of excellent cleavage on display in my Politics class, which is a lovely distraction. J'adore le politich however, so I have to multi-task between perving and serious discussion.

And perving.

Usually what I could be doing if classes and homework didn't take up so much of my god-damn time, like legitimately perusing a relationship... Being an engineering major sucks not only because of that, but because there are hardly any women in my classes anyway (plus, the way the rooms are set up, I wouldn't be able to see anything other than the back of their heads if they weren't sitting right next to me, which never happens).

I spend that time contemplating such important topics as: Batman; the rules of full-contact chess; politics; Batman again; religion; and of course hot girls that make me wish I didn't go to an all boys school.

The girl wearing a thong that sits right next to me, and how to peek when no-one notices it.
A quick glance to the left to examine the room and oh, there's the girl with the boobs bursting out of her top.

OT: Well, since I've only got 4 different lessons and I chose them, I listen most of the time. I find all my subjects interesting, aside from business studies which I plan to drop, so I generally have a good time both in and out of lessons.

That sounds like a really interesting class. I know I'd take it given the option. And generally, in two way classes, I too have an input and pay attention. Unfortunately, there are plenty on way classes like chemistry, French, English... Stuff we have to take. But I know I'd be interested and involved and a discussion class especially about music, or things I can be interested in.

My average first class:
Teacher: "Today we are learning......"
Me: (Head down) *Bored sounds followed by sleeping*
Teacher: "WAKE UP!"

While taking notes I'm usually thinking a few things.
1. An idea for my next story
2. An awesome game or movie that I wish I was playing or watching.
3. How comfortable the chairs in the lecture halls can be.

What? For whatever reason I just don't think of anything perverted when I'm in a lecture.

You're hilarious (seriously). I couldn't think of how to word it to mean thinking of people that I wanted to be there (eg hot girls). I had a failure in articulating my thoughts properly.

Ah...well, at the very least, it's a cute manga. ^_^

These days I rarely have trouble in any lessons and since we mainly do revision classes these days I spend my time drawing kangaroos of various professions and dispositions. I also spent one biology engaged in a drawing battle with a neighbour that only ended with the application of exploding babies, Darwin and the foot of God.

It was a good lesson.
