The first thing that comes to mind is a resonator gun. Sonically disintegrate your foes! Or a long-range nanoweave snare. Stealthy and quite garroteful. Also, I'm very disappointed by the fact that the bowel disruptor has yet to come to a video game, to the best of my knowledge.

While increased application of such weird and wacky designs would be awesome considering that weapon types in games have pretty much been fast shooty SMG, superpowered slow firing sniper rifle, medium range assault rifle, I mainly just want Sci-Fi guns that seem like actual guns, that don't look like they're entirely made out of cheap plastic, that sound like lethal weapons, that actually seem like the soldiers using them wouldn't laugh their asses off upon being issued with them. A Sci-Fi weapon doesn't always have to be all shiny and goofy and crap, and for me at least it can make the entire setting feel kind of stupid if its meant to be plausible, mature and grim and has stuff like that all over the place.

Killzone is probably the best example of guns I can think of which both feel slightly futuristic while still feeling like guns, however this is probably because 90% of them are 'inspired by' (ie, ripped off) real world designs.

Destroy All Humans! 1 and 2 featured the "Anal Probe", which was a weapon that fired a probe into a person's anus and then proceeded to make them defecate violently to the point that their head explodes...for some reason.

I've had this conversation before, some ideas I remember were:
- A gun that fires rifles with bayonets on them.
- A large railgun that fires steam trains full of monkeys.
- A gun that fires spinning dual ended lightsabers.
- A revolver that fires lit cigarettes backwards into people's mouths.
- The octopus firing crossbow.
They were all such silly ideas.
Personally I was a fan of the liquid Nitrogen Gun in Ratchet and Clank 3: Up your arsenal.

I want something approximating the Shredder from Turok 2.
Actually, almost all of T2's weapons were great.
Bring those back devs.

Also Strangers Wrath. More insect weapons!

Ever play Prey? The guns functioned the same as an assault rifle, shotgun, grenade, etc. But they looked/sounded totally different. The scope on the rifle was a tentacle that attached to your eyeball. The grenades are living insects where you rip the legs off them. And a bunch more.

But I agree. There aren't enough new sci-fi games coming out where the weapons aren't incredibly awesome.

Call me crazy but something bolt action would be awesome... and NOT a sniper rifle. Or something with an interesting spread... like three decent sized shots so its not like a shot gun but it shoots in a sort of cone... could be interesting probably not the most viable though but interesting.

Hate to say it but there is only so much you can do with guns to make them really interesting. In the end you want something that shoots in a strait line... unless you want a motor gun... that could be fun shooting in an arc...

Sci fi guns are boring?

Tell it Vera.

In all honesty, it's a tool and at some point you just reach the optimum design. I guess you can add all sorts of extra bits if you want, but bells and whistles give me a head ache.

Well. Guns adapt to enemies
If we make new enemies, we get new guns.
Let aliens invade that are allergic to pineapple smoothies. Or Cat hair.
Then we get Cathair-flechettes and smoothie blasters.
Watch them swell up and cough to death

An energy weapon that fires a hit-scan, charged particle bolt that bounces off walls until it hits an enemy or dissipates. The longer you charge it the more times and further it bounces or cause damage to enemies. Additionally each bounce robs it of potential energy to cause damage. Lastly, when it hits an enemy it sends a flower of additional hit-scan bolts ever which way. Once again the number and power of these bolts is determined by the charge and how many times it bounced before contacting an enemy and exploding. One graphical element is that like the Halo sniper rifle the bolts leave a trail behind them that can be traced.

While I love the chance to be creative, this list would trump anything I can come up with.

A gun that shoots two monomolecular wires that impale the target and then spin, turning the target into puree.

Eldar make all the best guns.

Have you seen some of the multiplayer exclusive guns in Mass Effect 3? They include:

An assault rifle that fires full-auto mini-grenades with a fire rate that increases the longer you fire

A sniper rifle that launches a massive spiked harpoon that inflicts bleeding damage

An electric flamethrower shotgun - no, not an electrically powered shotgun with fire rounds or something, it's a shotgun that spews electric fire

A sniper rifle that fires little rockets

That's in addition to the other weapons, which include a pistol that shoots sticky mines, an assault rifle that fires explosive chakrams and the almighty Claymore shotgun.

Well I've always liked the Pulse Rifles from the 40k universe. Cool but functional (it speaks to my inner pragmatist with that Form follows Function design).
