TBH id be carefull about calling EoE the true ending, a large part of why it was made was cuz of the fan outrage after the ending of the series. Anno loves torturing his fans, but in EoE he is going out of his way to fuck us over and spoil the ending for us. Most fact actually point to the remake movies being a direct continuation of the original series and EoE, there are a lot of hints, like the ocean already being LCL, and just about anything Kaworu says. It will be interesting to see what they do in the last 2 movies.
I'm aware of the sequal theories, and it certainly does seem that's where they're headed, but I figure that EoE can be both an ending and a beginning. Simply put, I can't see any reason for them to put in all of that build up only to end how they did leaving in so many loose ends. Wasn't EoE announced very soon after the end of the anime? As far as I'm concerned, there's enough proof to lead me to believe that EoE is the true ending of the anime.

i've always taken ep 25 and 26 signifying he accepted instrumentality, its been a while since i watched them, but in the end he accepts who he is, in the end when she stage shatters he is with everybody and all that congratulations bullcrap, thats instrumentality... man its been too long since i watched this, i cant make a compelling argument. But eva is open to interpretation if anything els, thus i win (in my mind).
I figure it's exactly what happened in EoE. He accepted Instrumentality, at least partially, at first, but then he realized what that actually meant and rejected that decision, thus the shattering of the world he created in 25-26.

And yes, the ability to interpret NGE in so many ways is part of what makes it so great, but I can't very well win or lose an argument here in that respect, can I :p

yeah thats true, but i've always taken the end of the series and moveis to be two separate endings, and im pretty sure that anno, or somebody at least, has stated something to that effect. Still its nice to find there are other eva nuts around here, i was stating to think i was the only one.

I'm inclined to agree with you. He obviously rejects Instrumentality in the movie and I had always thought he accepted it in 25 and 26. I just rewatched the ending of 26 and it confirmed what I thought originally. He's sitting in a chair battling with his inner demon's and talking about how he thinks everyone hates him but then everyone is like "no you only made yourself think that. Its ok to be who you are" and things to that effect. He then shatters that world and is congratulated by pretty much everyone important.

To me that says he didn't think he could become one with everyone else since they all hated him and he wasn't worthy. He sees that's not the case, shatters his doubts, and everyone merges, meaning he accepted it. I still prefer to look at it that way.

Since that's obviously not how it happened in the movie, clearly they must be alternative.

Yea, I've seen many theories that the Rebuilds may also just be another reality that Shinji's making in his head like the generic-school-anime in 26. I wonder how pissed people will be if at the end of the fourth Rebuild, we just see a giant shinji looking over above the city and we get that lovely 'Congratulations' again.

Yea, it's always fun to have more people to talk about with NGE. The series almost begs to be discussed. I actually marathoned the whole series and all 4 movies (Yes, even Death and Rebirth) ending with Rebuild 2.22 a while ago. Best 18 hours I've ever wasted.

hmn well im not convinced the rebuild is in shinji's head, all evidance seams to point to it being a direct continuation of EoE... something like a time loop, where the 2nd impact they refer to in the rebuild movies is actually the 3rd impact from EoE. The biggest piece of evidence for that is when kaworu says "i'll make you happy this time" (or something to that effect) in the after credits sequence in 2.22. It implies kaworu has knowledge, or memories about what happened in the original series. Also the fact that shinji is a lot more stable (and dare i say it, actually likeable), and accepting of himself and his desires points to that, since it coincides with the development he goes through in the original series, asuka is also mentally stable, and open to the idea of her liking shinji and generally accepting of other people, she also has the doll, showing she actually isin't resentful of her mother, but accepts that she loved her, again fitting the conclusion she comes to in EoE. I dunno, it all just fits together to well... there are to many direct, albeit subtle, tie ins to the original and EoE for rebuild to be a simple reimagining. Also the title, yeah its a rebuild of the original, but this series is well know for it double and triple meanings, so rebuild might refer to something like a rebuild of reality within the series. Im gonna have to watch rebuild again and pay more attention to what Ritsuko says, since it is well established that everything she said is either hidden plot exposition or foreshadowing.

Yea, I'm leaning much more towards the sequal theory as well.

There's also the fact that Rei is much more open about her emotions, especially those towards Shinji. I actually have one of the latest sheets that shows all the ways the movies tie in to each other.

I think I'll have to look into Ritsuko's lines again. I didn't really catch her foreshadowing too much so I should try listening a little closer to her.

Glass Fleet. They put absolutely no "Science" in the "science fiction", but they have spaceships and the story is compelling.

Y'know, I actually have to wonder...why no Gundam? I know I sounded rather derisive of its other entries in my recommendation a couple posts back(and, while what I said was perfectly true, it was largely to get you to watch 0080 because god DAMN any self-respecting anime fan needs to see that OVA), but why the hate? Some of them I understand. SEED and its sequel, 00, 0083, even Wing. But the original actually holds up rather well as what it's supposed to be. I'm curious as to what you saw that made you swear off the entire franchise.
I seen some episodes from a Gundam series as a kid, I don't know which one, and for whatever reason I didn't like it. The pilots, if I remember correctly, were very young and that turned me off of it. There was more but I don't remember. From what you and other people have been saying though I am thinking about going back and watching the original with a fresh mindset.
