The affect of a lit magnesium strip in aluminium oxide and iron oxide powder. Basiclly put the 2 oxides in a can add a mg strip and light it :p

Other things
The affect of C02 on plants
light on plants (that is so easy and quick to do)
grow some mold
do something with lasers lasers are cool and with some detectors and polarised glass you could point out how to make a safe lock. you can do almost anything with lasers, i will leave you to looking up the lasers and polorised filters.

My simplest science fair project was testing if light bulbs burn longer without oxygen inside the glass.
Basically i got some sealing jam jars an ran a couple wires into holes in their lids (sealing it with caulking) looped some fine copper wire between the two, and plugged it into a big ol' 6 volt battery. burn one strait, and light a candle in the other before you light it and it will show you that burning copper wire in a oxygen deprived environment will last longer than one in you usual jar o' air.
Its fairly simple and can be set up in a night.
I'm liking this one because it's so simple. My dad is thinking of safer ways to light a fire. My original project was going to be to check if buying petrol for your car is more value for money when it's colder in the day, due to changing density of the petrol, but it didn't work because apparently the meters in the pumps account for the density.
Also most fuel tanks are underground further mitigating the temperature change... Anyway, if you have any questions feel free to PM or quote me, this is far less depressing than most of the other posts i read on the escapist and i usually check in if i am bored for more than 7 minutes. BUT! I reserve the right to laugh that you are getting advice about science fair from a high school dropout.

I don't know if it's maybe a bit too advanced for you (I'm studying automotive engineering) but the last couple of years have seen the development of what is called a variable compression rate engine or VCR engine.

You said that your project should have some impact on the world and with this technology it is possible to cut a considerable part off the fuel consumption of the internal combustion engine and gives you the possibility to put anything in there: gas, diesel, methanol, LPG.

It uses some kind of an auxiliary cylinder, it's a bit hard to explain. Maybe you could build some kind of model of how it works. A prototype using this is the Peugeot MCE-5.

That sounds really awesome. Do you have any idea how one would build such a model?

Do a study to see if alchoal increases your chance to perform in exams. For a controlled experiment you need 4 buddys each with a different brand of alchoal and 1 person who doesn't drink (draws the short straw) for control.

Then try and see if by increasing your alchoal consumption and mixing it with energy drinks your overall performance increases or decreases.

Everyones happy and your are drinking!... For Science.

I don't know... I don't think that for a science fair in school it's necessary to invest in having it cast or lathed... Maybe cut it out of styrofoam? But be warned, this could get really heavy and difficult on the research and since it's not your original work you'd have to do a lot of citing your sources.

This probably doesnt count as science but for my final high school project I built a working model of a elevator. Got a solid A

I had to do a science project once. I put some seeds in the microwave for varying amounts of time to see how much radiation they could survive. I got an A for it which once again just goes to show that my entire schooling career was a fucking joke.
