i'd've said Whisky, but there was bound to be some fail trying to correct the spelling...
You would actually have been right here. Scotch is Whisky, Stuff from Ireland is Whiskey (plus other places use whiskey as far as I'm aware).
Whiskey just means a distilled spirit from a fermented grain mash - it's not indicative of a liquor from Ireland (just stereotypical of Ireland).
But it remains a fact, that only distilled spirit from a fermented grain mash from Scotland gets to drop the "e" from the name. I chose Ireland because Irish whiskey is the sort I encounter most often apart from Scotch, as it doesn't have its own additional name, like Bourbon does. I know that Ireland can produce spirits from all sorts of things.

Yeah, I'm aware it would've been right, but barely anyone else seems to.
and anywhere except Scotland, it's Whiskey...
Which is why Scotch is the best.

Isn't Booker's one of the Jim Beam ones?
Yep, Booker's is a Beam one, but it's fucking phenomenal. I work evenings at a liquor store and picked up a bottle for my father at cost. Even at cost, that shit ain't cheap. But well worth it.
So, from what i've heard, your father is somewhat lucky!
and you're lucky for getting things like that at cost *cough*IHATEYOU*cough*

Once of the most accessible introductions to scotch/bourbon/whisk(e)y was written in the context of cataloging James Bond's drinks orders, and I commend it to your attention: Bottled in Bond [http://teleport-city.com/wordpress/?p=16658].

It was largely owing to this article that I sought out a bottle of Pinch not long ago. Just to get properly started :).

You'd be amazed at how cheap a lot of stuff is at cost, and how expensive some stuff is at cost.

Colorado microbrew 12pack: $18 retail/ $11 cost

Orin Swift wine: ~$30 per bottle retail/ ~$18 cost

Booker's: ~$60 retail/ $40 cost

Even some of the shitty, cheap stuff is marked up over %40.

Then again, any Anheuser-Busch product is really only marked up a few percent. Nobody but AB make money off of that shit.

I like me a Bowmore 15.

My favourites are the Glenfiddich 15, and basically anything that Laphroaig ever produce (their quarter-cask is *brilliant*). Drank over plenty of rocks.
Gotta love that Laphroaig, you're right there.
My favorite whisky would be Jack Daniels. Simple, I know, but hey.

Bourbon drinker her; scotch is alright, but I prefer the vanilla, caramels and toffees in Bourbon.
ooooh Bourbon. I've only really tried Wild Turkey, and JD, if you count that as Bourbon...
Recommend me a good one...?
Knob Creek is a nice, $25 USD, bottle that you can get. Buffalo Trace is also some good stuff. Those two kinds are generally what I have on top of the fridge.

Booker's is even better, but that's topshelf stuff (>$50). And, if you're lucky enough to find a bottle of 12 year old Pappy Van Winkle's buy it, regardless of how much it'll cost you, it's incredible.

Well, it's because there are several types of Whiskey, and by calling them Scotch, Bourbon, etc..., you're able to better distinguish what you're looking for. If you walk into a liquor store and ask for a bottle of Whiskey, at least in NA, you'll be directed towards a nondescript bottle of brown liquor.
Or the alternative, which is to really try and enunciate the missing e in whisky, and then act smugly superior when misunderstood.

EDIT Accidentally quoted someone

Hate to knock everyone overhead with my Whisky lorebook again, but Jack is actually a whiskey - only us scots get to drop the e, possibly as a compensation for crippling unemployment. That being said, there's naught wrong with a Jack on the rocks.

I have fairly deep scottish roots, so even though it's an American drink, I'll give or take as many Es and I damn well please. :p

Damn right. You get told in school "potatoes, unlike other vegetables are ONLY good for carbohydrates, they only give energy."

I do have a soft-spot for whiskey, but sadly I cannot afford the expensive imported scotch, and experience has taught me to avoid cheap liquor in plastic bottles at all costs! Although...I am graduating tomorrow. Perhaps I ought to treat myself. Suggestions welcome, of course :)

yeah, treat yourself.
Aside from the ones i mentioned in the OP, Isle of Jura is rather good, as is the previously mentioned Glenmorangie.
OT: anyone who calls JD (brilliant as it is) a Whisky deserves to be shot.

EDIT: Haaaang on. you mean you can get Scotch in plastic bottles? ack!

Love me some Scotch Whiskey, on the rocks.

I'll go with the OP here on Glenfiddich.

What's the point getting a good single malt like that, if you're going to dilute it and throw ice in it?

You'd be better off getting the cheapest youngest blend you can :D

Johnny Walker: Red Label is pretty damned tasty, especially with some vanilla Coke. More often than not, though, I'll skip the mixing and drink it straight.

Yep, here's some scotch in plastic bottles::

My university actually has a lab course in which we analyze the constituent components of this stuff. Turns out it's rather nasty...

Thanks for the advice! I'll see what my local liquor store has for me.

Nothing like a snifter of whiskey and a cigar.

Favourite has to be Ardbeg- unfortunately the folks who made it seemed to of realised just how special it was and jumped up the price to silly levels.

Oh and I utterly despise Glenfidditch- they put colouring in it to the colour they want, and it tastes like cough syrup.
