Scott Snyder Ending Batman Run in April

Scott Snyder will end his multi-year Batman with issue 51 this April.

With few exceptions, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/batman>Batman is probably one of the most difficult superheroes to write well. Weighed down by a complex history and shackled to a large and dedicated fanbase that often expects very specific things from him, he's a character with heavy baggage. It's hard not to have at least a bit of admiration for writer <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/scott%20snyder?os=scott+snyder>Scott Snyder, in turn. Taking the reins of the Bat-verse back in 2011, he's spent the years since producing a string of Bat-stories ranging in quality from solid to bloody brilliant. Sadly, it's been confirmed that his reign as the guiding hand of Gotham will soon be coming to an end.

Speaking in a recent interview, Snyder revealed that April's Batman issue 51 will be the last produced by his and artist Greg Capullo's long-running collaboration. "[Batman 51] is really just a letter to the fans from us," He said. "It's the lightest I've ever written. Not the lightest as in happy, but light as in not as many panels per page. It's really, really open. It's a chance for Greg to draw the close before we take our break." Snyder would go on to say 51 will be a huge contrast to next month's Batman 50 which he claimed will be "the most explosive, jam-packed sort of blockbuster crazed issue we've ever done." Batman 51 will land in comic stores on April 13th.

While Snyder is finishing up Batman, it's possible he might not be done with the Caped Crusader altogether. Rumors have insinuated that Snyder might be hopping over to Batman sister series Detective Comics. Mind you, neither DC or Snyder has given any indicator that these rumors are true, but it's understandable why some would be hopeful. While some of his Batman writing (Court of Owls, Death of the Family) has definitely been better than other portions (Year Zero), Snyder's work has, overall, been excellent. Suffice it to say we'll be interested to see what he does with his next DC project.

Cool, I think it was about time he wrapped it up. I wonder what he'll do next, would be cool to see him do something with DC's horror characters again.

All good things must come to an end, I suppose, but dang. Snyder was probably one of my favorite Batman writers, along with Grant Morrison.

It's a shame Gotham by Midnight isn't still going...for a lot of reasons really, but also because I would have loved to see Snyder write and issue or a short arc.

As someone who really, really hated the current storyline, to the point of almost dropping the book, I have to say I enjoyed a recent rereading, mostly because I wasn't spending the issue going "is Batmsn coming back this month?" There was a great, creepy new villian, and several effective cliffhangers. He'll be missed. I wonder if Capullo is leaving too?

That's a shame, the Snyder-Capullo duo have definitely been my favorite current comic book. Capullo's art really pulls me in, more so than almost any other comic artist I've seen, and Snyder's writing is equally dark and smart and occasionally silly.

I really hope this doesn't mean the main Batman run is going to take a Superman turn (John Romita Jr. was a very lacking artist) or The Flash (the Thawne storyline tread water for a very, very long time).

Capullo is leaving as well.

Man The Flash... When Manapul and Buccelato left it went from the best of the New 52 to the absolute garbage of the entire Flash franchise.

OT: IMO he was the best writer of the New 52, but it really is his time to go. I have gotten quite tired of him trying to shove his new characters down our throats (Harper Row and the "Robins"). It wouldn't be so bad if the other characters that we already know and love were better developed, but the new 52 neutered half the Bat-family. See Robin War and Batman and Robin Eternal. Two series that had so much promise but could just not be held up by Snyder's new characters.

Still, I will miss his stuff. Especially Capullo's art, he made Batman's New 52 suit my favorite batsuit.

Yeah, I loved those two as well. Much as I'm more fond of Wally West, Manapul's art style is phenomenal (EDIT: or I suppose perhaps their combined art style, I'm not sure), and together they're a pretty good writing duo. I like Brett Booth's pencils, too, but holy wow, for a comic about the fastest man alive Venditti and Jensen sure don't know how to pace a story.

See Robin War and Batman and Robin Eternal. Two series that had so much promise but could just not be held up by Snyder's new characters.
I'm still enjoying Batman and Robin Eternal, but I'll admit I have pretty low standards for comics because it's only been the past year and a half or so that I started reading them.

This is absolute truth, though. Capullo's Batsuit is nothing short of art.

I might just need to re-read the entire Batman run soon.

I enjoy them too, I did not mean to imply that it is bad. It's just that the latest reveal that Harper is supposedly the "ultimate" Robin pissed me off so much. She is such an unlikable character, and Snyder never did much to make us like her. But Dick's story as well as the continued partnership of Jason and Tim (which I think we have Synder to thank for, this didnt exist pre-New 52) is always a fun read.

Oh, hah, fair enough.

I do have a certain fondness for the character, but yeah, they haven't had much in the way of any real development or push for relevance. It has been pretty sloppy. I actually think that
Spoiler
is being severely underutilized, which is a shame, but I think I just don't mind because I've seen so few new characters introduced in comics both old and new that I've been reading, and I like having a character who isn't really treading along the lines of their own backstory.

EDIT: A newly introduced character, I should say. Things have been getting shaken up with established characters and I appreciate that, but when old characters get reintroduced to the DC Universe it tends to be with some sort of variation of the story they already had.

I agree about Spoiler. She is a character that is close to my heart. I first encountered her when I was her "age" in the old Robin comic series, her and Tim's lives and relationship hit pretty close to home.

What other character has had underage sex, been pregnant in high school (and without a father), and given up her child for adoption?

As someone who is still pretty young, I am very tired of DC's attempts to pander to "us", us being the millennial crowd. Which is one of the reasons I dislike Harper. Piercings and a dyed undercut? Really? And at least Spoiler's origin (her old origin) was believable. Harper just went straight to being Ms. Genius with Tech, which was already a niche taken up by Tim.

Bleh, I'm gonna stop complaining now.

What I do like about Harper is, yeah, she's new, her relationship with her brother, and her friendship with Tim. They just need to stop rushing her growth. She went from being unable to even run about Gotham's rooftops to taking on Mr. Freeze in a few issues.
