Does anyone really care about Desmonds Story or even understand it? Would anyone care if they scraped it in favor of just telling Connors and other assassins stories?

I've only completed the first two, and I can say that I could care less for Desmond or his story. Apparently he gets better in the later games but still, 2 games in and I don't care about your "main character?" Not a good sign in my book.

I really like Desmond's story and the cast of characters (and their voice actors) that surround him. I am caught up in the mystery and would really be sad if it were just dropped. I've only played through the first two games, but I'm looking forward to an entire game (the last one?) entirely set in Desmond's present where he utilizes all of the skills and knowledge he gained throughout all the previous adventures.

That will be great!

Back when AC2 was announced I was excited to see more of Desmond. 1 executed the blend between Animus and Modern Day segments well. As the series went on I started caring less, and by Revelations I didn't really care about Desmond at all. He's finally doing Assassin-y stuff in the Present Day segments of 3, but I lost hope that the franchise could transcend genre.

1 was about Altair and setting up backstory, then two could've been Desmond escaping, contacting the remaining Assassins, and running modern-day missions. Maybe a hybrid platformer and Third person shooter. Then Three could've been a strategy game where you wage war against the Templars in full view of the rest of the world, condemning you both to be destroyed. It would have been a satisfying trilogy.

But now it's just "that series where you go back in time and kill people" They'll never break off from the Animus because it's crucial to the games now. Sad really.

I guess my answer is "No I don't care if they scrap it, but then there's no framing device." They would just become Prince of Persia. Anyone else ever hoped that The Prince from PoP was an Ancestor? And the Dagger of Time was a Piece of Eden? And that Sam Fisher is an Assassin now that he's destroyed Third Echelon? And that all Ubisoft games are connected like comic books? I do...

Having played only AC1 and halfway through AC2, the Desmond storyline had no place in the games what so ever. You can't focus on something that's barely connected to the rest of the story less than tenth of the game and expect anyone to give a damn.

I liked the idea of Desmond, but they fucked it up by not bothering to flesh him out, which is a shame. Instead he's just a plot device for setting up an alternative history storyline.

I think they should Wrap it up ( maybe the did in AC3 i haven't played it yet) but give his story finality then AC is FREE TO DO WHATEVER IT WANTS

Take the gameplay forumla, and change the settings with every game! Hardon!

They should have made a time travel plot where Ezio is transported to the future and solves all of Desmond's problems while Desmond falls off a railing or has a heart attack or something. Or alternatively let Animus have an accident and upload Ezio's personality to Desmond's brain.

HEEEEELL no. the thing i really love about desmond's story in particular is how it ties in with the "what if" style of the game. lets be honest, without desmond and the animus the game would be no where near as believable (you know, as believable as a freerunning, eagle vision using, templar killing, swan diving into a pile of hay...ing assassin can be). the animus sets up the scenario of "this machine is telling it how it actually happened, because that's what it does" instead of just the "what if this is what really happened" one. also they ended desmond's story in this game not going to say how, (also this isn't really a spoiler since ubisoft was like "OH HEY THIS IS DESMOND'S LAST GAME") and also i don't see how anyone couldn't understand Desmond's story, it's pretty straight forward if you just pay attention to it.

Saying this implies that you do actually care about Desmond and his story. If you had said, "I couldn't care less", that would mean that you don't care about him and his story at all. Sorry, I know it's a minor complaint but this phrase gets worded incorrectly so often that I feel a physical need to correct people.

OT: I think they should just wrap it up. If it instead goes into a bunch more expansion type games to conclude the story, I won't be picking up this game. I want to know that the story is, for the most part, concluded before I buy this.

You are not alone.

Anyway, I'm only half-way through AC III, so I don't know how Desmond's story ends, but I've always been fine with him. Desmond and the Animus provide more context to a series that jumps from time period to time period.

Without the future perspective, there would be no continuity, and I think after having the games transcend hundreds years between sequels, that continuity is necessary. Plus, it's not like the games dwell on Desmond. Perhaps that's why some people don't care for him, but it seems Ubisoft knows you'd rather be playing as a mythical assassin in a unique setting.

Desmond was a total drag in the first few games. And if you asked me that question after playing "AC2:Brotherhood", I would have said "Hell yes! Ditch the Adam Sandler-looking mo fo"

But I have to admit, I finally got into his story in "AC2: Revelations" when he was trapped in the Animus.

As he was trying to reclaim those fractured pieces of his memory, I started to really understand his character. And during his interactions with "Subject 16", I began to see his potential.

So no, I don't think they should scrap his story. But maybe they could speed its development up a bit.

And since I haven't played AC3 yet, who knows? Maybe they do.

Assassin's Creed isn't Assassin's Creed with out Desmond. He is in the game just long enough to loosely string the series together, along with being the catalyst that fuels the Animus.

Why people get so worked up over him I really don't understand why. It's not like 50% of the game play is as him.

As to the question, I've enjoyed Desmond's story greatly. I really miss the puzzles from the previous games; boo for the hyper minded children who whine and scream bloody murder if they don't get the chance to stab somebody every 12 seconds.

I honestly would have little interest in the AC series as a whole if it wasn't for Desmond's story line. I'd probably play one of the games, but I wouldn't have any interest at all in playing the entire series.

Desmond is the glue that holds the series together, without it, it's a completely disconnected series of games that have little to tie them together other than a name.

There's a continuing story there with or without Desmond.

I don't care for Desmond, but it's not like I don't understand your point of view.
However, even if it was a disconnected series like you said it would (which I don't agree with either, they could fairly easily tie the games together anyway, I'd say), would that really be such a bad thing? In my mind, no. I'd still play them, even if they only had mere hints and were simply about the protagonists in each game.

This would be perfect. Desmond is so fucking boring, I couldn't care less about him or his shitty problems and his shitty girlfriend. All boring. Like someone else said earlier in the thread, I really expected AC2 to feature Desmonds escape, but now we are bound to the animus really. Which is a shame, but on the bright side, we were given Ezio, who is one of my favourite video game characters.
