i have win 7 64bit version and i have set in win that the screen should not turn off at all. but for some reason after 15min it turns it self off regardless.
where else can i adjust the settings of the screen?

wile at it.
i have a r9 290x and i keep getting random crashes were the screen turns black and the entire computer is frozen that a forced restart is required. very obnoxious when in middle of something like work. i have installed the latest drivers but it doesnt seem to be the case. i didnt do any changes in the settings. everything is set to its default setting.

Couple of things here:

1) Is it the monitor itself turning off or is the display going to sleep?
2) Do you have a screensaver set that you see before the black screen?
3) Is it exactly 15 minutes each time?

Try checking your display preferences, screen saver settings, and power options (under your control panel). You should see a "turn off display" setting. If you need step by step guidance on how to find this I can post that for you.

The system freezing could be several things that you need to eliminate in troubleshooting it:

1) Malware / Virus (least likely, honestly, but it depends on how you manage your computer).
2) Program running that is locking the computer.
3) Overheat / Internal hardware failures.

Also, is this a laptop or desktop you're dealing with?

I had a problem that sounds exactly the same as yours, but it would mostly happen when playing not particularly tasking games(Minecraft, Football Manager, Don't Starve). It turned out the motherboard was the issue. After the mobo was replaced everything was hunky dory. Too be honest though it could be anything. I'd try taking out the components one by one/swapping them with another machine' to see if it continues. That way you can rule out it being hardware related, this might not be a feasible way of troubleshooting it though.

The 290xs are notorious for black screening issues with any number of causes for it ranging from OCing them right through to the type of memory.

The post is extensive and the range of solutions and reasons behind the black screening are the primary reason why the card I won off that very site was sold and the money used to buy a 980GTX.

RMAing the card and hoping the replacement works being the only sure fire-ish solution.
