The problem that you run into with voice-acting is that you get the Final Fantasy 10 effect where you have to sit through lengthy cutscenes until the characters finish talking instead of just pressing a button once you finish reading a dialogue box.
A simple solution is press the X button to kill the voice and have the dialogue appear in a box that can be removed for a more cinematic view, like in some of the speech scenes in Lost Odyssey but in the entire game.
Square won't do that because they became pretentious dongs after they released Final Fantasy 10 and they now believe that their games are nothing short of staggering dramatic genius.
Since a revamp of Chrono Trigger would introduce a new generation to the title, Square would want to ensure that everyone "fully understood the complexities of the narrative" or whatever it is that they have been aiming at for the past 10 years.
