So, I just watched this movie and I was curious if anyone else had. What did you think of it? Personally I thought it was really interesting but the ending felt like a bit of a letdown. I mean, whats the moral here, dont mess around with kevin spacey? The acting and everything was fine, and the way he did the killings was sick, but I felt like I should have walked away from it with more on my mind than "wow, thats fucked up."

On a side note, which murder did you think was the most interesting? I thought pride was really twisted because he left it up to the victim.

Brad Pitt's character was Wrath dude. The psycho completed his lesson. The most interesting? The last one. Come on, "What's in the box!!!!!!". That was just a tense moment.

Jealousy has to be the best.

I don't think David Fincher ever does make movies that leave you to think of something. And once you watch a three hour movie attempting to say things about life then it gets far more depressing than Seven here. (But apparently it also gets you nominated for 12 academy awards. More like the Bullshit Case of Benjamin Button.)

Although you could say it is Morgan Freeman's character regaining his faith.

Oh and sloth was the one I'd least like to go through.

Loved Se7en! But I'm not so hot on some of the comments on this thread...well, I won't quote directly, but:

First off, the movie doesn't really have a moral. If it did, I think it would be "life isn't fair", or something like that... but it didn't bother me. Maybe it's just that I'm very sick of happy endings, but the ending worked for me.

Oh, and this isn't a slasher flick AT ALL. This has nothing to do with that god-awful genre that should just dissapear. This film is a thriller through and through... note the lack of on-screen deaths (there's only one).

As for my favorite murder, well, it would have to be wrath. The build up to that was incredibly tense!

Really? JUST saw it? You know that movie is almost fifteen years old, right? Crazy...sorry, anyhow, I didn't find any one of the murders more gruesome or interesting than the other, but Morgan Freeman's running narration in the form of his speeches at Brad Pitt was just brilliant, made you think about things you wouldn't have considered otherwise without coming across as condescending...I dunno, I've always been a fan of David Fincher, anyways...funny, come to think of it, he also directed Fight Club AND The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...I get Mr. Fincher has a bit of a man crush on Mr. Pitt, but really, who doesn't, just a little bit?

At least it isn't a full blown obsession like what Tim Burton has for Johnny Depp...

Responding to the threads about it being too dark...that's basically Fincher's style. Check out Alien 3, Fight Club, Zodiac, and even The Curiously Drawn-out Case of Brad Pitt...all of those have been simultaneously criticized and praised for using below-average levels of light, and all of them paint fairly dark views of the human psyche.

Kind of like Tony Scott's style can often be equated with an acid trip (Domino, Man on Fire, Enemy of the State to a lesser extent).

I don't think there was supposed to be a moral. That's part of the point seeing as the killer was driven by an oversimplified view of the world, ending it with a moral would cheapen it.

I'm pretty sure the ending was to make you go "wow, that's fucked up" and leave it at that.

Or if you wanted you could as yourself whether you'd do it or not.

On a side note. I massively prefer Fallen. It's similar in many ways and has a stunner of an ending. The cast is equally great (Denzel Washington, John Goodman & Donald Sutherland) and the twist is one of the best ever made.

hmmm, interesting replies. certainly more than I expected. I definitely agree that the ending was very intense and Brad's acting in particular was extremely good. And I guess Paradox is right in that Morgan Freeman does sorta regain his faith, or at least his will to keep working.

I saw it first time ever yesterday, and I thought it was great. Very thought provoking and interesting, though disturbing. My favorite (bad choice of words) was lust as it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what he "used" and I almost fucking vomited.

I love this film!!! Im actually glad you never see any of the murders take place, (ok maybe the sloth death is an exception) as it just adds to the suspense of the film.

The problem may be you expected 'a message'. This is not a Disney film. It's a dark look at humanity's shitty side.

You might not love the ending now, but five years from now you'll realise it's perfect. (although Fincher did just want it to fade to black with no Morgan Freeman voice over, which may have been even better).

I'm glad City of God was mentioned because there's definite parallels between that and Se7en. manicfoot summed it up nicely, and so does Somerset in his last line of the film. Whereas New York is more about anonymity and how we tend to ignore more people the more densely we get packed in, the overarching theme is that life is hard.

Never saw a connection with City of God and Se7en myself, Always thought City of God was a really uplifting positive feel good movie, Like Goodfellas was at least to me.

Though the whole theme in my eyes, Was that everyone is a sinner and so humanity as a whole equals sin.

Watch it again. If the Final murder wasn't the most interesting (Vengeance) than you missed the most important part of the movie. He killed the Detective's wife because he lusted after her, then Brad Pitt killed him for killing his wife. I loved this movie.

It was envy and wrath. not lust and vengeance. he already did lust, and vengeance isnt even on the list. he specifically said he envied Brad's life, his home, and his pretty wife.

Uplifting? seriously? I admit it ends alright for the main character, but the last shot in the movie is of ten year old boys with guns talking about killing other kids. There are also scenes of rape, murder, and torture.

I wasnt saying it was just like se7en, but I think that both are movies with dark themes and disturbing scenes. The difference was that in COG I felt like the creators had more to communicate than simply "life really sucks. there's allot of fucked up shit."
