I'd say "I own roughly 1000 games". But that's just me.

If we're talking a secret code phrase to know you're a real gamer, it'd probably need to be a combination of things. Like say:
"Gordon Freeman, JC Denton, Link, Sephiroth, Kane, Max Payne, Peggle, Zombies, and Terraria. Need some more?"

Hopefully they'd get the point.

I'd say that the term "Gamer" is self explanatory.

If someone told me they were a gamer, I'd assume they own some sort of gaming platform (Xbox, PSP, PS3, PC). I wouldn't deny someone the title of gamer just because they play Call of Duty once in a while. If someone puts their money into a console or a PC, they are a gamer. I think they deserve that much. Just because they play a mainstream game, doesn't make them any less of a gamer then someone who plays more nerdy games.

The only time I wouldn't apply the term "Gamer" is when they play stupid little "apps" on their little iPod or other gizmo. I don't think it currently qualifies as a legitimate gaming platform. That's not to say that it won't be soon. It's rapidly growing in popularity among retards who like to spend 95% of their time poking a screen.

Drop a meme, 'the cake is a lie', 'you spoony bard' etc etc. Don't use the G word, I tend to find it usually has a negative impact on whoever I'm talking to. Unless it's a man. Joke...

The only true gamers are part of the PC gaming master race. The rest are just dirty peasants.

True gamers no longer mention it because the word has been dirtied by said peasants.

I don't know the last time I've used the word 'gamer,' I think it sounds odd. I just call myself a nerd. But people seem to know that I play video games all the time because there's usually a DS in my pocket.

We does it matter, you know you play games why does he need to acknowledged it, it's just a hobby not a mark of honer. I myself wouldn't even care to talk to someone about games if they think I need to have some random knowledge in order to enjoy games, because chances are the're elitist.

To be eligible for the "Gamer" title, in my opinion, you need to have played for six hours in a single day at least once (preferably straight). You also need to have played in the dark at least once because you were too engrossed to go to the light switch, or because you find it helps immersion.

Neither of these need to be a regular thing though

Variables such as gender, what game you were playing, and on which platform are irrelevant.

TL:DR The phrase would be "I once played for 6 hours straight in the dark."

Simple, " whats your favorite game? " if the answer is anything mainstream.. NOT A GAMER just a dude who plays games.

Some sort of referential thing that is universal but exclusive to the more involved members of the gaming communinity...hmmm. Well it CANNOT have anything to do with cake, god knows we don't need to beat that particular dead horse anymore. I have no idea, there really isn't a catch all reference I can think of, there are just too many different types of games. Wait I know! We can sing miracle of sound songs to each other, that will work!
"are you a gamer?"
"Gordon freeman saved my life!"
"sweet, so whats your take on Human Revolution?"
And so on and so forth. I see nothing wrong with this plan.

Never had this problem. Ever. People never doubt my nerdiness after more than about 5 minutes of conversation. I don't look it, but I'm nerd to my core.

To be a gamer you need to play games.

Any thoughts to the contrary reeks of self importance. Requirements that other gamers have to do what you do to be considered a gamer is silly. That's like being a guitarist in a band and telling everyone who hasn't got to a band playing stage that they're not a real guitarist.

Nope, they still are, no matter how much you hate them.

It's not very different at all. I just don't like touch screen things. It's a personal thing.

I understand why it's so popular. iPods and other touch screen devices have created a whole new casual gamer market. There are some fun and creative games available for touch screen devices.

In my eyes though, it will never be anything more than a gimmick. Unfortunately, touch screen is just going to become more and more popular until buttons are extinct. :(

i cant think of anything. yeah, i'm a gamer. but i have bloody great taste in life in general. the girl i like knows i play, and if i hit it off with her. im sure it wont be a problem. its just because everyone thinks we waste our lives on them. and no one believes that something that wastes so much time for so many of us cannot possibly be an art form. which is why no one takes us seriously at all.

I don't actually like the phrase "gamer". I read books and watch movies, does that make me a reader or a watcher? I just say "I play videogames" instead.

If you need some sort of phrase to distinguish between casual and hardcore (two more concepts I don't like), you could just say you're really into games or you play a lot of games.

In my eyes though, it will never be anything more than a gimmick.

There are now entire gaming platforms hosting hundreds of games built entirely around touchscreens. How widespread and ubiquitous does something have to be before people will stop calling it a gimmick?

I feel like that word is basically meaningless now and just gets tossed out to dismiss anything the person using it doesn't personally care for.

For example, they would ask "Are you a gamer?"
And you would reply with "Yes. Yes, I am."
And they would instantly know.
Seriously, the definition of 'gamer' is 'someone who plays games'. The ideas floating around these days that "You have to have played X to be a gamer" or "If you like Y you can't be a true gamer" are just pretentious nonsense perpetuated by immature elitists who feel that gaming has to be some obscure and exclusive members-only club. Gaming is a hobby that is free and open to all; no-one should be dismissed or taken to task for the type of games they do or do not play.

This is a bit of a sticky subject for me. For someone to be given the title of gamer in my area, can cause good/bad attention. Not only that, but the factions within gaming. Since there are those that wish to point out Casual Gamers, they tend to point out that they are not "real gamers". And my question is always, "Why not?"

They enjoy games, probably as much as you do. Why must the type of game define the gamer? If they enjoy spending time playing farmville more than CoD, why must they be considered inferior? Both Casual games and others have their own merits. I would never say that any genre is better than the other, as I won't say what sort of gamer is more "Hardcore" than the other.

Why can't people just celebrate that all gamers, casual or no, love games?

But that's my rant.

Whenever someone tells me they are a gamer, I ask what sort of games they like, then state my own, and the conversation flows from there. But I have yet to find a person besides my hyper religious great aunt that hasn't played at least one game and enjoyed it. So the title of Gamer has meant less and less to me over the years.

But a personal preference does not define them as less of a gamer than you. And, if you think that they will end up more and more popular until Buttons are extinct, then it wouldn't be a gimmick anymore; It will have become the norm.
