Well I've been playing for about an hour and I have to say, I'm really not impressed.
The game just feels clunky, awkward, and old. Sure, it doesn't feel like a typical MMO in many ways. But it doesn't feel like a fun game either.
I don't like how the tutorial areas are full of people all stampeding toward the same point on the map. I don't like how creepy the characters look; they're deep in the Uncanny Valley. I don't like that most other characters have voices but yours doesn't...Your character just stands there with wide eyes and open mouth, nodding like an idiot in response to what everyone says.
The writing is mediocre. I know a lot of people were excited about it being in a modern setting, saying at least it would be different from the usual medieval fantasy, but since the whole thing is based around the idea of "all the stories you've ever heard are true," it really doesn't feel all that original. (Also, at one point an NPC referred to my character as "they" instead of "she." It was really jarring, since every story-based game I've played recently has used different dialogue depending on your character's gender.)
The combat is your usual hotkey stuff. It's cool that you can build your own class from the ground up and all that, but it really doesn't feel like enough.
I'd really have to say at this point that I enjoyed my time with FFXIV more than I've enjoyed TSW so far.
I know it's just beta, but I feel I've played enough MMO betas to know when a game just has too many core problems to ever be any good. Not to mention the fact that there's no NDA for this beta (meaning they feel the game is ready enough to be shown off) and it's supposed to be releasing in only a couple months.
Shame.
