Uhm. I think it's symbolic. They don't literally mean seeing red. I really hope you didn't think it was true.

It's to do with bulls, bulls get really angry when they see red, so people say that when they are really angry they see red.

Mostly i think thats a reference to bulls being attracted to the color red. So no, however i did get so bored one time in class that i stared at the same spot in the corner for over half an hour and i swear all the color disappeared. I went color blind for a while.

EDIT: damn i was ninja'd about the bulls.

I once busted a blood vessel in my eye during a sparring match. Not really the same.

When I beat the crap out of a bully the teacher said I was seeing red.
But no, it wasn't red. It was crystal clear. Big Stick + Bully's Head = Ass Kicking.

To answer your question nope, its as the poster above suggested, it could have stemmed from many sources, maybe the idea that a bull charges at something red (or at least its portrayed that way) lead to this expression, or that red is like blood which can be attributed to anger or violence, maybe terminator's red vision spawned the idea, to be honest I dont know where it came from but the point is you should not see all red when you are angry

What's the symbology there?
Sorts of like bulls seeing red. Y'know, if you ever see a bull, wave something red in front of it and you'll learn >_<

Seeing red = metaphore for being really pissed off. And probably blood too. Or something.
That doesn't make sense since it doesn't matter what color you wave in front of them since bulls are colorblind(pretty sure they are).

p.s. no cookie for you for missing the reference!

At times I have actually been so enraged that I'd be seeing 2 worlds at once: Through my eyes I'd see the regular world, & in my mind I'd see it as a world being burned down in red hellfire. This is what I think when people say I'm seeing red.

But I agree with the metaphor theory of bulls being angry when they see red.

Now if you're really pissed off and in a fight, adrenaline has some awesome effects.
Yeah adrenaline actually gave me enough oomph to pull a spinning back kick, I kicked royal ass that day...

For me, its usually all a white rage. Or a blur, I can usually remember the best parts though.

Good lord, can you still use that eye?
It healed quickly, though it did make most of my left eye red for about a week. Not a very bad affliction, just a small vessel ruptured when I took to many right hooks. I heard it's possible to bust one while sneezing too hard.
