I was on my way to work the other day when I noticed a segway...

I then thought "what the hell happened!"

Segways were big news a few years back. Now you hear nothing about them at all.

I live in Australia so maybe it's just my country but is there a country out there that has segways as a big mode of transport or is the segway slowly dying out?

Segways arn't dying out here; they were never alive. Too large, too expensive, too slow and too wierd. I mean, one person's got to be the first to use something in order for it to become popular, and can you actually immagine being the only person going down the street on one without being laughed at?

That, and it shot itself in the foot by being marketed as something of the 'Star Trek Era,' that does not help (sadly) something to become cool.

Speaking of Australia, what's your opinion on your best known national monument, the Sydney Opera House? Architectural genius, or the work of some twit who doesn't know what buildings look like?

Because Segways were always too expensive and too silly to warrant a purchase.
Then again; so are cars, but those took off somehow...

Too expensive. Why spend so much money on something that only replaces walking speeds? Sure they're fun, but it'd be better to get exercise anyway.

Well I can tell you what killed them in the UK. The government deciding you needed a liscence, it to be registered, insurance, to pay road tax and not ride in pedestrian areas... It kinda put it in the same price and use bracket as cars and motorcycles...

Well cars served a very important purpose, getting from point A to B a whole lot faster than the normal methods, plus at that time machines like that were amazing wonders of creation, and Ford made them cheap, and, etc etc

Anyways, Segways really serve no necessary purpose

Segways serve no real market. They are big, expensive modes of transportation that only save you from walking, and the moment you live in a place where there are too many elevations on the road (i.e. any developing country or place with bad road upkeep), it becomes a hindrance rather than a convenience. This is a classic case of people making a very innovative product that serves no market. Sony did the same thing several years back with their robot dog. What market did it serve? None. They just thought it was a really cool product without knowing what or who they are trying to sell this thing to.

I've seen more useless things have more popularity. The fall of the Segway is a tragic marketing failure.

didn't the owner of the segway company die while using one? I don't know if that would have anything to do with it I mean I think it's top speed is about 10mph.

They're a... neat... concept, from an engineering standpoint... but they're horrifically impractical, for reasons already stated in this thread. As a niche toy for "geek-cool" types (and as a transportation alternative for people with very specific handicaps), I doubt they'll ever really die. They're just not in vogue anymore.

They're over priced and look stupid. There's also very few situations that would justify owning one.

Also the invetor drove one off a cliff and died.

We have a security guard who goes around on one at our University, mostly giving people parking tickets. Which I guess has biased me against them. They remind me of people who ride unicycles. They aren't there for practicality, they are there to say, hey screw you I have a Segway.
