I've seen many games where the flag next to the "English" choice is the Union Jack. Then again, there aren't that many games that ask you what language you want to play in in the first place.

Dialects/where developer is located/population sizes. Also, it's United Kingdom. England is not a country.

Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Anyway, this is the pettiest whine I've seen about something in quite a while. Well done.

England, Scotland and Wales are their own countries. Great Britain refers to all three together. They obivoulsy have been unified historically but each has its own governing body, though there is also a governing body of all three. Just like the term British Isles which refers to Great Britain, Ireland and surrounding areas, some of which are under the control of England - they are considered their own territories.

Really? Even better then that guy who wanted to have sex with a decapitated arm earlier?? he was whining about how he could not have sex with it because the games industry did not allow him.

I think the OP is just stating that there is in fact no such language as English (american), it is simply English and should be stated as such. From a grammatical point of view he is more than correct.

...its really more like how we have states in the U.S. or provinces in Canada than actual countries.

Despite his moronic example he had a fair point.

Yours is just bitching about what country gets to be put next to 'English' in brackets; the US is likely chosen because it's about 50 times larger than us, and since it's still English there's no need to add two countries in.

In the way the work, that is true. They are unified while having autonomy. however from a legal standpoint they are still their own country.

"BRITAIN, the largest island in the archipelago just north of France; the island of Britain contains three countries: ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, and WALES.

ENGLAND is one of the countries of Britain.

SCOTLAND is one of the countries of Britain.

WALES is one of the countries of Britain.

NORTHERN IRELAND is a jurisdiction having approximately the same status as England, Scotland, and Wales, but on a different island.

The UNITED KINGDOM is the union of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, including whatever islands are also included in those countries. The full name of the United Kingdom is THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND. The United Kingdom itself is a country. Thus it is a country that is made up of four countries. A country made of countries might seem a paradox, yet the countries that make up the UK, especially England, Scotland, and Wales, do not think of themselves as anything less; Scotland has its own Parliament and banknotes, Wales has its own language and National Assembly, all three have national identities going back more than a thousand years, and the Encyclopedia Britannica calls them countries (next item). Perhaps more to the point, ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, WALES, and NORTHERN IRELAND are listed in the USPS Index of Countries and Localities. (According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term UNITED KINGDOM was first used in 1801 and, until 1921, included Ireland.)"

There are minor differences, which is why they distinguish the two.

Elevator and Lift, stuff like that.
I know that and I understand why it is differentiated, but to be honest, like the OP it does bother me that the americanisation of English is almost seen as its own language when its not. Every English speaking country has its own nuances but you dont ever see English (New Zealand), English (Australia), English (Singapore) etc.
