England, Scotland and Wales are their own countries. Great Britain refers to all three together. They obivoulsy have been unified historically but each has its own governing body, though there is also a governing body of all three. Just like the term British Isles which refers to Great Britain, Ireland and surrounding areas, some of which are under the control of England - they are considered their own territories.Aenir said:...the fuck? Anyway, this is the pettiest whine I've seen about something in quite a while. Well done.
...its really more like how we have states in the U.S. or provinces in Canada than actual countries.jelock said:England, Scotland and Wales are their own countries. In the way the work, that is true. They are unified while having autonomy. however from a legal standpoint they are still their own country.Aenir said:...its really more like how we have states in the U.S. or provinces in Canada than actual countries.jelock said:England, Scotland and Wales are their own countries. I know that and I understand why it is differentiated, but to be honest, like the OP it does bother me that the americanisation of English is almost seen as its own language when its not. Every English speaking country has its own nuances but you dont ever see English (New Zealand), English (Australia), English (Singapore) etc.TheNamlessGuy said:There are minor differences, which is why they distinguish the two.jelock said:I think the OP is just stating that there is in fact no such language as English (american), it is simply English and should be stated as such. From a grammatical point of view he is more than correct.
Elevator and Lift, stuff like that.

Yours is just bitching about what country gets to be put next to 'English' in brackets; the US is likely chosen because it's about 50 times larger than us, and since it's still English there's no need to add two countries in.
