I like to set my self random challenges in games, but the only one I can think of recently is doing a hitman mission without being noticed whilst killing a lot of people.

That and doing as many flips as possible on trials HD on the timed levels whilst still trying to get a gold. Silly me, I just get carried away with the rotations.

Back when Splinter Cell was a stealth based game, I went through Chaos Theory using what I called 'ghost rules'

No unnecessary killing/knocking unconcious (I.E, killing or knocking out someone is an essential plot point)

No alerts

No damage to the scenery (This includes no shooting lights, breaking locks, etc.)

The Bank mission was the funnest one to do these rules on. If you do it right, you leave the level looking exactly as it was when you showed up.

Typically, I just do speed runs of various games. They don't usually change the difficulty that much, but it's alright.

In GTA i would never use any heavy weapons that I didn't feel Niko could carry in his pocket. Except for a single assault rifle that he could be carrying.

The last real game challenge I did was Alan Wake's "Don't fire a shot from beginning to near end of Episode 6."

Pro-tip: Even though it's possible, try to avoid going for this challenge while on the Nightmare difficulty setting.

Does anyone ever place challenges on themselves that the game doesn't? I have two that I'm trying right now:

In Halo: Reach, I'm trying to see how far I can get without firing a bullet. I almost have to hold my controller sideways to keep my fingers away from the trigger button but I got through the first mission without shooting anything so I'm pleased.

In Pokemon Fire Red I'm trying to get through the entire game with the first 6 pokemon caught (i know some people have beat the game with only one pokemon but only using the first 6 is a big deal to me). There are some notable holes in my team but I'm hopeful that Spearow, Mankey, Caterpie (now a Butterfree), Nidoran (now a Nidorino), Rattata, and Bulbasaur will carry me far.

Those are the only two I have on me right now, so what challenges do you guys give yourselves that the game doesn't?
I did a 'purple pokemon only' playthrough. Fun stuff. Butterfree, Shelder, Golbat, Rattata, Haunter and Arbok. Good stuff. The thing is though, that Rocket's pokemon are mainly poison types, so most of their attack were useless.

OT: Fable: TLC. Mage-only (I cheated by adding guile for money and health because I don't like a skinny hero and it seemed like a good fall-back). It is pathetically easy (I never touched on my health BTW), the only trouble comes with the final final boss, a.k.a. Dragon-Jack (it's been a ka-jillion years, it isn't a spoiler at this point), and that isn't 'trouble' so much as his defence means that my spells did shit all damage. So it was time-consuming, not hard.

I'm a total perfectionist when it comes to stealth games. I do thief without interacting with guards in any permanent way (i.e. no killing/knocking out, only distraction) and no alerts. Actually, now that I think about it I do that for pretty much all my stealth games except maybe hitman. In mgs2, I went almost the entire way without killing/knocking out a single guard and no alerts but there is a room in shell 2 that literally cannot be done that way
The circular room with the ladder down to the sniping part

Old splinter Cells 100% completion on levels.

Splinter Cell conviction, realistic difficulty, melee only. (one wrong move and you're done)

Rainbow Six games, pistol only, sniper only; things like that.

L4D2 Melee, pistol only.

There was a level in the new goldeneye featuring the Russian Army during the first use of the EMP satellite, and I decided it was wrong to kill them, as they were non-aggressors, so I only snuck and punched my way through it til I found the baddies.

I play every single game doing a solo character and/or no magic/ranged run.

Every. Single. Game. Yes. Ranged includes guns.

The only time I'll ever use magic/ranged/another character is if the game absolutely REQUIRES you to use it to proceed. (Most recent example is the final/cutscene bosses in Dead Space 2. If you get near it, you get instant-killed, so I used an unupgraded Plasma Cutter for that.)

Some games really make it hard, though, like Final Fantasy VII. (Over three bosses had instant-kill attacks. I needed Meteorain to beat Reno...)

I've done a few runs of the first 5 TR games using only pistols. I had to use things like the scoped magnum or the H&K MP5 when nothing else was available or if I really needed to use a specific gun though (That floating laser-spewing head of doom in... Trajan Markets I think?)

Other than that nothing I remember.

Starcraft 2 campaign on Hard without building any units.
Please explain to me how that's possible??

-Halo 2 had a lot of these challanges for me and my friends. Mostly getting on top of multiplayer levels, and getting the scarab gun in the Metropolis level. That's a hard thing to do but it doesn't take too long.

-Getting through Deus Ex without killing anyone. Basically just a lot of stealth, invisibility and darts.

After the first couple times I played Metal Gear Solid, I always would beat Psycho Mantis without using the controller port or statue exploits. Means you can't use any weapons at all to damage him, just punches and kicks, which only hit about 5% of the time. Takes up to a half hour or more, but it keeps it interesting.

Also, I did a straight character challenge in Final Fantasy Tactics with the Knight class (one of the tougher classes for that). Means you use no other abilities from any other job for any character, only what's available in the Knight job class. The lack of healing or ranged attack options was a real bear, especially at Riovanes.

Play any shooter without reloading manually. Because the fact that I can toss a magazine aside carelessly and somehow save the four bullets that were in it and put it back into my pocket with all the others strikes me as a bit bullshit. Plus it adds to a challenge when I try to gun down somebody and I have only two bullets in the magazine.

Play through pokemon games with pokemon i would'nt think of using in a story based team, and give them nicknames to personalise them: think of it sort of like a Nuzlocke run, but with severely relaxed rules, a team of Ariados, Jynx, Furret, Tentacruel, Victoribel and a Nidoqueen was awesome. :D

Rules
- Nickname every pokemon you are intending to have in your team as fighters.
- Only allowed 6 'Mains'
- Not allowed to use your starter for experience except for the rival fight and you must istantly remove it from your party when you gain access to a Main/Pokeballs.
- The use of HMs/TMs are not allowed, allthough HM moves that is required to progress the story may be taught to non-mains only. (this is to prevent pokemon fom gaining powerful moves that would otherwise be beneficial to their movesets of simular type, compare water gun to Surf as an example)
- Move tutors are not allowed either, espcially the Headbutt Tutor!
- items are not allowed except for ones that fuels the plot, you'll have to remove any items a pokemon might be carrying and you must avoid using them aswell, both in and out the battle, regular pokeballs are exempt of the rule. (this does not mean you are allowed to use a pokemon with an item stealing move to steal an item to use, thats not allowed too)
- Non-mains are not allowed to be the first pokemon in the party, this is to prevent abuse of a KO'ed pokemon with compound eyes or any other ability that effects the game, this also includes abilities that involentraily act up outside of battles such as Pick Up.
- You can use money to buy pokeballs from stores, but only pokeballs, and you're not allowed to sell items for cash, nor can you rematch people for cash.
- a Dead main is consided dead and placed in a box, you're not allowed to substitute it with a non-main then turn it into a main.
- Additionally, anymove that lets you use any moves that a pokemon has is forbidden, things like Assist...(not sure if theres any other moves that does this)
- Not allowed to go to the breeding centre, this is to avoid the breeding of a desirable main to get around any clauses.
