BTW, if you haven't heard, Britain is now forcing retailers to hide cigarettes under the counter, comes in in about a week.

But you just carry on drinking. Nothing like a mood-altering drug to get you away from another mood-altering drug. Good thing it doesn't make you aggressive, that would be terrible.

The whole goddamn point of the lawsuit wasn't "Are you liable for me spilling coffee on myself?" but "Was your coffee unreasonably hot for a carry-out beverage in the first place?"

This.

While suing McDonald's over sandwiches making oneself fat is crossing the line into auto-responsibility-absolution absurdity, the coffee lawsuit was actually on the level. McDonald's really did act with negligence in that situation--medical groups had been warning them about their coffee for years before the lawsuit actually happened.

You can tell your coffee is too hot when it inflicts third degree burns and melts skin. Honestly, people.

That's it. I've had it, I can't take anymore. The word government is being removed from my vocabulary and replaced with Nanny.

Cigarettes killed my father, and raped my mother. But I forgave them. Then cigarettes gave my nanna cancer, but she survived...so I forgave them. But I will not sit by and...what was my point again? Oh right...it's about choice, smoking is inconvenient for those who don't smoke and have to put up with it...and who have to cover for their colleagues while they smoke. But you can get upset by that or you can deal with it...same applies for some crappy ads. Ignore them...it's for the best.

When I was a kid I realised you were better off smoking Cannabis then Cigarettes, at least you actually got something out of it. People say it relieves stress when in reality its releasing the brains need for nicotine.

I personally don't think smoking is a choice either, every smoker my age I know started because of peer pressure in school and are now addicted. I worked in an NHS pharmacy for a while so I can say from first hand experience that people who want to quit smoking find it ridiculously difficult even with willpower and nicotine drugs, luckily most manage it.

I've never known anyone take up smoking later in life as mature adult and I bet there are very very few who have. So I support anti-smoking ads if they stop children from ever getting addicted in the first place.

I'm not sure how they would punish you for committing suicide.

On topic, Truth is just trying to get the message across that cigarettes = bad. They're a little overzealous and have decided to go for not only cigarettes but the tobacco company and everyone involved in it as well. Decades of education programs have not worked and the frustrated Truth people are trying to kill the source of cigarettes to end it. There commercials have gotten stupid recently, but there point is still just to try and get the word out.

"Don't swear"? No offense, but if you're put off by swearing, the internet might not be somewhere you want to hang around.

Anyway, on topic: You know what anti-smoking ads I did like? The "Y?" ads. Sure, they had an agenda, but they were more thought-provoking than anything else.

You clearly weren't here for the fuck thread.
I hate smokers because when they get lung cancer they will be using tax payer funded medical facilities and I am not cool with funding your habits.

I may have mentioned it :) [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.73043?page=1]

BTW hypothetical fact, I'm funding your petrol/gasoline habit, your alcohol habit, your government habit, and a lot more, and my cigs give your government over 95% of their price back. You're not suffering too hard for me.

Any of those adds on lifetime with the one guy who is somehow famious but just feels like a walking talking stereotype. Hell lets just go with any lifetime ad. Now I like lifetime, and I admit it. Many of my favorite old sitcoms are on it. I get to watch will and grace and then Frasier, the golden girls, the nanny. Granted I usually turn the golden girls now as I have memorized every episode but that's not the point. I don't want to turn on my TV to watch fake blond women I can't tell apart making stupid smalltalk with some overly flamboyant guy who apparently didn't get the memo about acting like a steriotypical tool on TV.

I also hate those commercials that talk about overstock.com I think it is. The ones where they tell you to be 'shoppertunistic' and don't point out how it hurts the economy overall or give you these horrible one dimensional scenarios for why they get all this stuff because being like biglots and saying "yeah people don't want it so we sell it" is apparently beneath them.

I like big lots

I find it odd that a lot of people that talk about personal responsibility ignore the responsibility of tobacco compinies that spend millions-if not billions- of dollars advertising that children should ingest a harmful substance. When the tobacco companies are caught on it, they say "Not our fault. We're not responsible!".

They sell bubble gum flavored cigarettes and put product placement ads in Superman II. Who do yo think the tobacco industry is advertising to?

The truth ads only seem to work when they attack the advertising machine and not the tobacco itself.

Sure the kids should accept some responsibility but blaming only the kids ignores half the equation.
