Some tips if you decide to go back.

Magic is the key to that fight, pyromancy or regular magic work really well. Smoug has a weakness to lightning attacks, but Osternith has a resistance to lightning. If you ever go back to it, take out Osternith first and then Smoug cause Smoug telegraphs his attacks more and is just slower. If you go after Osternith last, drop the heavy armor, don't lock on and roll towards his feet when ever he is about to attack and make sure you use the fury sword, cause his biggest weakness seems to be fire.

Yeah, the problem being i am a melee based character, bar some healing blessings.
I havnt found a fire sword...

You can make one. Get a plus 10 fury sword and Quualeg's soul, give it to the giant black smith and tell him to make the furry sword. The more humanity you have the more damage the weapon does as well. Magic isn't necessary, but it makes the fight easier. You can get pyromancy if you saved Laneus, and it doesn't require stats, all you have to do is find or buy the spells from trainers.

I only had it as a rental months ago. I have a job now, so money's not really the issue.

I still remember my first Dark Knight takedown...*sigh* that ***** tasted my vengeful wrath.
