Oh this is going to go over well.
/sarcasm
I have to ask though, why do they have to have boobs the size of beach balls? I fail to see the attraction of that.

And why, why, why do they always have to look so young? It's already bad enough without you putting massive tits the size of beach balls on someone who looks about 10.
You exaggerate.

They look 12.

Oh yippee! Look at all the hypocrisy!

"GJKD:AF BIG BOOBS IN DRAGON'S CROWN? IT SUCKS AND IS SEXIST!"
"Big Boobs in a Japanese port? Oh well, those wacky Japanese."

This is what I have gotten out of this thread so far.
The difference is that Dragon's Crown is (apparently) a good game but a fair share of people can't really enjoy it as much because of all its pandering. And isn't that kind of sad? But if jiggling breasts are the only reason to buy a game, you're not really missing out on anything if you don't like jiggling breasts. It's equivalent to complaining about sexism in a porn movie. It's not like anybody is missing out on the fascinating life of babysitter Hailey because she doesn't like all the explicit scenes in this movie...

Well, after reading your post I finally decided to head over to Polygon and see what all the rumpus was about. And... seriously? That was it? A very dry, not particularly interesting review containing one short paragraph where the author said some of the artwork was "distracting" and two or three throwaway lines about "adolescent fantasies"? All that rage stemmed from this?

Screw this, I'm off to the Andes to spend the rest of my days as a llama.

OT: Can I just ask what's so great about Senran Kagura that had people complaining that "it won't be allowed in the West" for the past few weeks? It looks like a regular beat'em up and the artstyle looks rather generic. I understand the concept of "different strokes" and all that, but can someone explain to me what makes this game so anticipated?

I heard of this game before and thought, separate of the obvious issues, that game has decently constructed gameplay with nothing special

and with the obvious, well, *MASSIVE NOSEBLEED*

*faints*

I know Japan has different perceptions of sex and sexuality (hell, minimum age of consent there is 13, you can now get creeped out) but this is still ridiculously beyond what is normal for them.

Senran Kagura is a fanservice anime where the boobs are the point. That's entirely different from dragon's crown I think.

I personally never said what Dragon's Crown was sexist. I said it was misguided and it made people uncomfortable.

Here ecchi seems to be the main aim.
Yeah, that seems to be it and while an anime exists out of the game (somehow), i'm not sure that the character development will be able to actually elevate the game to anything past otaku pandering

I will comment though that, until substantial gameplay footage comes out, we will not be able to fully evaluate the merits of the game; we only have imagery and imagery can be deceptive towards actual quality

that is agreeable and the SIGNIFICANT age difference (at least in design, not sure how old they are in story) makes it even worse. As I stated above, Japan's view on sexuality, especially in teenagers, is very different but this does approach a limit that should not be crossed

I honestly have no problem with this.

I may get annoyed when my side scrolling beat 'em ups take an unexpected side trip into the gutter of sexual pandering, but when they just come right out from the get go and scream "Hey check out this awesome gutter!" I can't get too riled up about it.

Yeah it's stupid and immature and I'm not going to play it, but I can't really criticize it too much for being exactly what it sets out to be.

This game is going to be flame bait on the forums/blogs for sure.

With that said, too bad I don't own a 3DS.

Well, most of the world doesn't share the USA's puritanical "18 only!" views of sexuality so that part of it to me seems rather typical. You just have so much american-centric representations of things in media that you think it's just the norm or how it's supposed to be rather than merely a perspecrtive of a specific culture that only applies to itself.

Look like I had found a future game to buy for my 3DS...

I kid! I'll wait for the review for then to shamelessly buying it for the boobs!

Either way it won't suprise me if there will be future uproar about that game.

As I understand it, the fear wasn't that it wouldn't be allowed in the west, but that XSEED was too wary-- especially in the wake of the complaints directed by certain critics at Vanillaware-- of a shitty critical response and resultant poor metascore/sales to offer it to the west.

In JP, western critics have a (pretty well deserved) reputation for being anime-and-service-loathing whiners (a reputation earned for reviews of Neptunia, blogs about Dragon's Crown and sparse but noisy criticisms of the Atelier series).

Actually, westerners have a general reputation in JP for rejecting anything not comprised of one or more butch men carving up other butch men. And that reputation isn't benign; it has caused more than one studio to make pretty drastic changes to their games- just look at NA's disgusting fucking Nier.

Luckily, something has prompted XSEED to flip the haters- who knows what? I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, I'll just grab a 3DS and a few copies of the EU release to show my support.

Well said sir.

OT: I wont be getting this game it dosent appeal to me even if it wasnt on handheld the gameplay just looks like it will leave me unsatisfied while the characters offer nothing neither drawing me in or repelling me. I ofc dont know the series so I am obviously not a target audience member I do find it amazing that the game is getting localised though. The more games that get localised the better imo.

I think that's more of a Western perception thing. In the same way that we see anime characters as Caucasian, but Japanese people would see them as Japanese.
I know this is completely off topic, and I'm not fighting you on this, I know it's the truth... but I hate that. I hate that so much. If I drew myself with long wavy blond hair, a smaller nose, and a light tan, most people would think I'm like some really tanned surfer dude. To constantly say 'No, that character is obviously black' is mind numbing to me.

I'm sorry, that just bugs me so much.

Believe me, I really don't share that view as well and I am also well accustomed to large chests in anime but you have to admit that this seems, if not taboo, at least a bit ridiculous that girls that look at most 14 years of age having chests that are mostly seen on 25 year old women. It's a bit of a dissonance; at least with the Sorceress, we knew she was at least in the mid 20's but this is just odd.

So basically culture misunderstanding between Japan and the West combined with a bit of unintentional xenophobia is causing a lot of, if not spectacular, at least good games from being ported over and it is also causing rifts in the development of future games?

Criticism of both Western and Japanese style games can be made by both shores but we do need to stop baring arms against each other, come to understand cultural differences, and actually discuss these issues.
