After watching an old Zero Punctuation video, Yahtzee said "imagine a world without sequels, wouldn't that be sa wonderful place? Sure we'd miss a few good sequels but isn't that worth it?"

Would it erally be better if there was no sequels in the world, or would they just start making prequels? And would we miss any good sequels?

The problem with sequels/prequels is they are trying to capture the wow factor from the first game, this is VERY hard to do. A series like Mass Effect works because it is an ongoing story bioware even made significant gameplay changes between the two.

I think most of the problem is devs/pubs are becoming reliant on big brand names to sell games hence we end up most of the money being poured into call of battlefield honour instead of putting it into making a new IP. Pubs want a sure thing so even a shitty sequel to a good original will rake in cash, rather than risk it on a new IP.

For every "Aliens" we get, we get 100 "Aliens 3" and "Aliens Resurrection".

What about spiritual successors? Take the "Souls" games for example. Different worlds, different stories, different items, different gameplay, but built around one extremely similar concept and execution.

Hell no.

There are many sequels/prequels/series additions that I love and would hate to see go away.

I don't have a clue what are you talking about, kind sir. There was "Alien" movie, followed by "Aliens" and that's it. I've heard that there's also "Prometheus" which acts like a prequel, but i'll hold my judgment for now. :)

There's a difference between a sequel that continues the story of - or expands upon - the original and a sequel that is just made because the first one sold well.

Hahahaha! *brofist*

Sequels aren't bad things, but when it becomes more about the $$$ than the passion, the game is lost.

If that were the case, we wouldn't have had the likes of The Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back. Being a sequel doesn't automatically make something shit; sometimes you want to see what happens next.

I'd say that sequels should be allowed, but there should be a "cooldown" period of at least five years. That way, each product would have to be made to count, as opposed to an uninspired cash-in. Also, the project should be lead by people who liked the first one, but aren't afraid to really wade in and fix the stuff that didn't work.

Hell the fuck no.

A large section of the greatest Movies, Books and Games of all time, are sequels.
- Lord of the Rings
- Star Wars
- Mass Effect, Half Life 2, Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Halo

A world without sequels would be AWFUL.

The idea was that by not being allowed to have sequels devs would be forced to come up with more original stuff. And yes, it would probably be better.

I honestly think Lufia II was an improvement form the original.
Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia were better than Tales of Phantasia and the last game in the series of those 3 was the best one.
I liked Batman Arkham City better than Asylum.
Driver 2 was better than Driver and Driver San Fransisco was tons better than Driver 3.
Saints Row 2 (one of my all time favourites) was a lot better than Saints Row.

Or short answers. There's a lot of great sequels out there. Sequels give us new gameplay mechanics and known characters. It gives developers a point to start working from, it gives us something familiar that we can trust will be good.

In all aspects of life you need to take the bad with the good, and so it is with sequels.

I think what Yahtzee was referring to with that statement was the overdependency on sequels and brand recognition in the entertainment industry.

The immediate thought that pops into my head is that with no sequels I wouldn't have a chance of seeing one to TWEWY, and that is just too horrible to comprehend.
