I might be lynched for this, but I'm going to go with Rush Hour 2. The humor was ticked up a notch, the action was ramped up, the story was still good, and everything about it was just generally more enjoyable.

Shame it declined a bit for 3, mostly where the story was concerned.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Half-Life 2 yet on the videogame front. Just as well, there's no sense bringing up something that's been said a thousand times.

As far as movies go, The Bourne Supremacy (the 2nd one) was my favorite in that series, and arguably the best one.

The Empire Strikes Back. BEST SEQUEL EVER MADE. PERIOD. The Dark Knight comes after that. What a good movie.

As for games? Half-Life 2 obviously. So good I still play it. I would seriously buy it over again if Valve came out with a super hi-def, updated graphics version of HL2 with 7.1 surround sound.

I'm actually kind of surprised someone brought up the Bourne Trilogy... but Ultimatum was my favorite, hands down. Supremacy just didn't do much for me. I like it, and own it, but if I'm reaching for some Bourne smackdown, it's not the one I reach for.

As far as regular sequels... Well, yes, The Dark Knight is fantastic (even though I was horrified during most of it)... If we're counting the third movie in a trilogy as a sequel (does that count?), I hold by The Bourne Ultimatum, Ocean's 13, and... just as a ridiculous music reference, Muse's HAARP.

Video game sequels will always make me think of Tomb Raider 2. I still love that game.

Ocean's 13 was actually pretty good, so I'll give you that. Well played, worthy opponent...

Another thing that just came to mind was Unreal Tournament 2003 (and 2004; they're basically the same game). It improved on the original UT by leaps and bounds, and it's still my favorite in the series, even over UT3.

I just came back from the future and fable 2 is better than fable, also the worlds gonna end somehow unless someone does... something or other. Probably not important

You could argue it was a prequel, and that Oceans 12 was the sequel (and awful)
How? I may have missed something huge, but 13 happens after all the stuff from 12, which is why you have Toulour (that is exceedingly incorrect spelling) and the mention of Isabelle and all that...

edit: And I agree, Ocean's 12 was shit. Also, Vanguard1219, I acknowledge your skill. Also well played.

What about books? I think most of Terry Pratchett's later work in the Discworld series is far better than his earliest stuff. In my opinion the series doesn't really start to pick up until Equal Rites. (Then again, Granny Weatherwax is one of my favorite characters by far.)

One good way to measure who is a genuinely creative person and who is a hack is that a creative person's work continually improves as they stretch themselves into new areas of increasingly difficult endeavor. A hack may tell a good story once or twice but the well of their ability dries up very quickly and they are left endlessly parroting themselves. Of course, there are many, many mixtures between these extremes. Art of any kind is a demanding discipline and it's so very easy to let yourself slip when other things intrude.

What about Spiderman 2? I also thought the second Fantastic Four movie was better than the first, but since neither were especially good that wasn't so difficult.

Aliens!.... I can't believe I forgot about that one.......
Matter of opinion- I think Alien is the better film.
All of this is a matter of opinion, really. I suppose the main reason why people would differ on their opinion of Aliens is that it was much more of an action/adventure movie than Alien, and there wasn't quite as much claustrophobic, anticipatory horror in Aliens compared to Alien.......

The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2). I actually like the first one more, but the second is generally considered the best of the series. "Push me, shove you! Oh yeah, says who?"

I prefer Aliens because I find I can watch it over and over. Tons of aliens and space marines battling it out and a final, epic battle of the queen versus Ripley in a futuristic fork-life suit. Sweet. But the original is great to watch with someone who hasn't seen it.

I've actually noticed a similar thing with Terminator and The Matrix (and a few other movies). The originals are better movies, but not as good to re-watch. T2 and Matrix Reloaded are so action packed that I always end up watching them when they're on TV.

They're both different types of films, so it depends what you like, but you can't say Aliens is an improvement on Alien.
