To me Golden Sun: The Lost Age is better then the first one since it had more stuff and more freedom (the sailing the boat part) then the first game.

Terminator 2, ALIENS, Ass Creed 2, Just Cause 2, Uncharted 2 (although I still want to play the first one) The Dark Knight etc.
Aw, I wanted to say that.:(

Ok, the second series of Blackadder. The first one was brilliant, but the second one was better than that.
Yes I totally agree, the Blackadder series only got better and better.

Episode 1!

Jk jk ...but I thought that Episode 2 was better than 1. That Episode 3 was better than 2 ... hmm and that 4,5,6 and six sort of ascended in good-ness (depending on taste)

There's loads... The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Aliens, The Dark Knight, Godfather pt2, Bad Boys 2, Rush Hour 2... And so on
hats off to ya great list there except for the inclusion of bad boys 2 urgh what a cack sequel in my opinion i never knew before this film that it was possible to have to many explosions and gun fights in a film
You thought THAT had a lot of gunfights?

Oh, you need to watch Hard Boiled. There's maybe two scenes without shooting. Maybe.

Nolan's Dark Knight to Nolan's Batman Begins!
Nah, the first was much better.

For starters it actually seemed to, you know, be set in Gotham.
Dark Knight..was set in Gotham. You know the GCPD (Gotham City Police Department) and all that. Even if it wasn't (it is), why would it matter?
I think he meant that Batman Begins version of Gotham was a lot more dark and foreboding in appearance than Dark Knight's Gotham which just looked like a modern city.

Personally I think DK was better as well.

I much prefered Call of Duty: Black Ops to MW2, ME2 to the first, Ass Creed Bro to Ass Creed 2, Reach to Halo 3, Gears 3 to- you know what? Basically all of the AAA sequels in 2010, especially Uncharted 2.

Spiderman 2.

But a movie like that that's based on a comic-book with lots of material to adapt can avoid many of the inherent problems of sequels, mainly trying to stretch an idea that worked well for a one movie into a series.

Also, I liked Jurassic Park 2 better than the first one. The idea of an island where dinosaurs live free is an appealing, albeit even more silly than anything the first movie had to offer, and I liked it how the protagonists had to deal with the bad humans as well who would run around being douchebags being eaten.
That goes for Spider-man 2 the game as well. ^^ The first movie game was fun enough, but Spidey 2 literally changed the way looked at superhero games. Everything that comes out now in the superhero genre I compare to Spidey 2, Spidey 3 and Ultimate Spider-Man (my personal favorite).

OT: On the subject of superhero games, I'm gonna go with The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Whilst it's technically not a sequel to Radical Entertainment's first Hulk game, based on Ang Lee's Hulk, it was always a spiritual successor, meant to improve of the original and it did in every way.

Zone of Enders 2 is a big step up from its predecessor.

Gears of War 2 is much more fun to play than the original. Ditto "Assassins Creed II."

And not sure if this counts as a "Sequel" but I still prefer Ocarina of Time over any preceding Zelda titles.

Grand Theft Auto 3 was a definite improvement on the previous games, with the story, the introduction of new game play mechanics that blew the sandbox style game wide open, and for bringing the game in to the third dimension.

Unreal Tournament 2004. While the incremental 2003 expanded the series, 2004 introduced the vehicles, more game modes, and is generally held up as the current pinnacle of the series (though in my opinion UT3 to date is the best).

Assassins creed 2 and brotherhood were both better than the first, Red Dead Redemption was better than Revolver, Blade 2 was better than Blade (both film and game) and the Jackass films get better each time.

The only thing that i actually ever liked about those films is the fact that i can say Alice, Alice who the fuck is Alice har har har
Jovovich is an apalling actress and should stick to modelling
How in the hell is she appalling?
Hmmmmm well the only thing more wooden than her acting is a shed
The 5th Element would like to have a word with you.

Having said that, I think the Resi films jumped about a bit on the good to bad ratio, 1 was. . . ok 2 was better, 3 was . . . ok 4 was tripe and the latest one has left me weeping for the series, but oddly enough only because of a complete disregard for physics in the opening scene.

OT: In an attempt to mention one not already stated, I preferred Superman 2 to the original.

My money on ALIENS, TERMINATOR 2, and The Dark Knight

The action packed siblings of the first borns with universe broadening stories.

For games, Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2
they just play better.

This. Damn ninjas...

Anyway, as for another answer... Majora's Mask was leagues better than Ocarina of Time.

Movies:
Terminator 2
Evil Dead 2 (I thought the first one was boring as hell, and the second one brought in Sam Raimi's now-trademark humor)
The Dark Knight
Attack of the Clones (better than Phantom Menace, but still inferior to the original trilogy)
Spiderman 2

I've decided to skip out on all the "threequels" (or later) that were better than sequels, since the topic specifically mentions "originals" and the list would get a lot longer if I started listing later installments (Blade Trinity being better than Blade II, for example).
While we're still on movies, I don't understand why so many people are saying that Aliens is better than Alien. Aliens is great, sure, but the second one replaced the sheer terror and suspense of the original with more action sequences. I love Aliens, but I think that Alien was just a better movie.

Games:
Mass Effect 2
Assassin's Creed 2 (of course, AC1 and ME1 were amazing games in their own right, but the developers had a chance to refine both games for their sequels)
Red Dead Redemption
Saint's Row 2
Mega Man 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Most fighting game franchises also tend to increase in quality as the gameplay is refined over the course of a series.
Once again, I'm skipping out on any game with a number higher than "2" on the end.
