@Nouw: The Shining is probably my second favorite Kubrick film. Jack Nicholson is very convincing when he's playing someone who is slowly losing their mind. ^_^

@Nouw: Oh I haven't seen it yet so I can't really say if it's scary or not. But I have to say the past few "Scary" movies I saw were disappointing.

@staika: It's probably less "scary" than it is genuinely suspenseful. Even if you know the iconic scenes from the movie it can still be a pretty harrowing ride if you haven't seen the whole film before.

I'd say it's held up better than, say, Alien. I can totally see how Alien scared the shit out of my parents back in the day but all of the horror of that film is based around the strange biologic processes of the Xenomorph. Since these processes are ingrained in modern pop-culture, the film loses a lot of it's shock value. Even so, both Alien and The Shining are really atmospheric films that deserve a watch if you're into that sort of thing. XP

@Link: yeah once the shock value is gone a lot of things aren't really scary anymore. I don't watch a lot of movies though so the list if movies I've watched is low.
