It had been a rough day, one of those that nothing seems to go right. My boss was threatening to terminate my position, despite my efforts to keep his business afloat... Ungrateful bastard.
Passing a storefront, another murder had just been announced, followed by a short piece on mob justice. The spy had done an excellent job rooting out the killer's identity, leaving only two remaining people who fit his description. Wanting out of this farce, I did the unthinkable. I called the killer out. Little did I know that he would be only too happy to accept my challenge.
I arrived at my house on the edge of town, and had just finished locking the door when I heard it. The sound of a hammer being cocked. "You're running out of places to hide." I told him. "In the end, my death will have only bought the spy more time to inform the others."
"True, but how could I refuse one as blatantly overconfident as yourself?" The killer responded. I hadn't turned to face him yet, knowing that once I did, my end would come.
"I'm not going to beg, if that's what you're hoping for. It wouldn't save me anyway." I stood tall as I turned around, accepting that which my actions had brought upon me. "See you in hell."
The last words I would ever utter, for once they left my lips, the killer put a single round through my heart.
