Series That Rely Too Much on Expanded Universe Media

I wouldn't say Halo, since it doesn't actually rely on it. You can read the books, it will give you more information about the universe, but as someone that has never seen anything other than what the game has put immediately in front of me I have never had a problem with Halo. I didn't have any trouble with any of the things listed. I'm sorry, I just really don't see the problem here.

Im going to guess you have never played halo 4 because that is were the problems starts, the story in the other games has never been good but haloe 4 was terrbile. let me some it up in one sentace

I dont know, I still dont know but every one else does. Even cheif who was asleep for two years. Even the Marines who have been fighting the convanat for decades, they know what i diadect is. So having only played the games, how do i not know, and how am i not told? was i suppose to know before this?

Diadact was the name of the villain forerunner of Halo 4, how hard was that? They mention his name, show it the subtitles constantly, why is it so hard to watch cutscenes? My brother played the game, had the same problem, only reason: did not watch the cutscenes.

Skyrim has far too much expanded universe media stored within the in-game books. Thankfully, those books are in-game.

Unfortunately, The Elder Scrolls very, very, very rarely uses all of the lore it's built up over the years.

Yes, you get books upon books. But none of it comes up in NPC conversation, or is ever acknowledged by anyone, really.

I mean, you'd think you might see a Redguard ruminating on the sinking of Yokuda, or a mother worrying how her son looked more ill than a Thrassian Plague victim. Or anyone saying anything about Akavir. The closest you get most of the time are weapons which bear Akaviri titles.

But no. You don't get any of that. I love lore-diving on UESP, learning more about the universe, the mythology, the races (many of which haven't even been in the games). I just wish Bethesda would actually use some of it.

Oh my god, the second I saw the title of this thread I knew that I would talk about the Elder Scrolls. I don't mind a game having lots of EU stuff but its annoying when there is just such an insanely huge amount of EU fluff for the Elder Scrolls games and absolutely none of it is ever mentioned in the games. Like I don't even know where people are getting all this lore? Is it coming from the books you find in game? I didn't even know any of the lore existed until I went on the Elder Scrolls TV Tropes page and saw all sorts of stuff I had never even heard of.

Yeah, it's pretty much all in the books.

But I personally surf UESP [http://uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page] if I want to know more about something.

The novels by Greg Keyes are canonical, so some of the lore comes from those, too.

What about Kingdom Hearts? It relies on you having seen lots of Disney films, and played a few Square Enix games too. The game is literally all about nostalgia and selling other media. Baffles me its so popular sometimes.

You just answered your own question. I didn't really know anything Final Fantasy when I got Kingdom Hearts, just the Disney side of things but I grew to like the characters, both original and Final Fantasy related enough to check out their games and get into the series and re-watch those Disney classics that I haven't in a while. Win for the game makers and a win for me. They tend to keep their fans in the loop story-wise by updating and re-releasing stuff people might've missed due to not having the system the next installment was on. When KH3 comes out, the fan base and newcomers should be up to date 'cuz of the HD remix releases if they weren't caught up already.

And? Businesses exist to make money, what's so wrong with that? It markets itself to over-lapping and established fan bases for those things though, meaning the people who're more likely to pay for it (like me) were interested in what it had to offer in the first place. If you're really not interested you don't HAVE to buy their stuff and if you're just clueless about the franchises there's videos on youtube so it's risk free. There's a demand, thus they supply. I wouldn't pay for something I don't care about, especially if it isn't a basic necessity like food/shelter/education so no harm no foul.
