So I just finished watching Cowboy Bebop my first trek into the anime genre and I loved it. I then went looking for anime shows supposedly similar to Bebop.

I watched the first episode of Trigun and was disgusted, it was basically everything I don't want it an anime. Bad/childish voice acting, weird anime faces, and a bunch of little kids/girls running around with guns.

Are there any serious animes out there that are similar to Cowboy Bebop?

Check out Samurai Champloo. It's somewhat similar to the style of Bebop and not childish.

EDIT: And before you get turned off by the hip-hop theme of it: I abhor hip-hop and rap stuff, but the anime is done really well to the point that I actually like it.

Off the top of my head? Ghost in the Shell and Black Lagoon are the most similar. At least out of all the anime I've watched, which admittedly isn't much...

So... give those a shot I guess. If I'm wrong or made a stupid recommendation, I'm sure people will be along to correct me and point you in the right direction.

Well, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is pretty damn good, and has a lead female character that doesn't want to make me rip my fucking ears and/or eyes out.

Seriously...

The Major is like the Commander Shepard of the anime universe.

I'd agree. Until that happens.

You know what I'm talking about. The series took a nosedive for the worst about halfway through.

"A nosedive" is generous. Death Note was BRILLIANT up until the point where it turned to utter shit.

Agreed, I actually couldn't finish the series because of that. I got maybe three episodes after that event and decided it sucked now.

Darker than black is done by the same studio as bebop, I think, and is a good serious anime. Just don't expect it to answer all your questions. Also avoid the 2nd season for tis a different style, though i didn't mind it.

Darker than Black is semi-serious (Trying to list animes that others before me haven't), but it suffers from the same problems that Death Note did, except a little late in the series.

Expect any anime series' you watch to get worse and worse the farther you get into it. It is fairly rare to find animes that don't do this, and those are the ones that EVERYBODY LOVES...cowboy bebop probably being one of the best examples. Good luck finding another one like it, cause I haven't.

In before "Watch it in Japanese if you don't want bad voice acting"

Lets see... Serious Anime...
I would highly recommend the original Ghost in the Shell movie as a great starting point.
Blue Gender is another of my personal favorites that happens to be on the more serious end of the slider, as is Last Exile.
Evangelion is always a good watch, but may not be the cup-o-tea for someone just getting into anime.
Fruits Basket, RahXephon and Vampire Knight are also good picks from the more serious end. =3

What a person ends up liking is often reflected in the the normal movies and shows that would otherwise watch.

I would advise staying away from any meta-series until you get your bearings though, filler is a killer after all =3

Does anyone else like Gunslinger Girl? The title makes it sound like a joke, but it's a very serious anime about various moral issues. I really enjoyed Season 1 for its darker portrayal of the series, and Season 2 is passable, with (in my opinion) worse art direction despite the original manga artist helping out. But the series as a whole is good and serious.

There are lots of options that don't have the serious suck-factor of Trigun. Cause believe me when I say this, I agree. It's kind of a shitty show, bad plot, worse characters, and horrendous production values. Few redeeming factors.

I do believe Ghost in the Shell has shown up, and I'd agree it's definitely a good call, though it doesn't have the blend of mature (and by mature I mean mature, not "inappropriate immaturity") humor and serious thematic elements of Bebop. It's only got serious thematic elements, most of which are more political than they are emotionally or philosophically charged (like in Bebop. Still, it's a good show, with solid characters, an interesting well developed, if at times convoluted, plot, and some really good production values.

If you don't demand action, Mushishi would also be a really good call. It's more a blend of fantasy and slice of life. It's pretty quiet and contemplative. It's also one of the most original and by far one of the most beautiful animes around. Every time I try to describe it to someone I end up lacking for words to properly express even the most basic plot elements. It's kind of just one of those things you have to see to get, so try and watch a few episodes (you probably won't be able to get a feel for it until you've seen the first three or four) if it sounds interesting.

Ergo Proxy is good, though it does take itself just a little bit too seriously at times. It kind of threw me off at first, cause it wore the garb of a post-apocalyptic utopian narrative, which I'll be honest is a theme that has been so played to death that it's not even mildly interesting anymore. That said, once you watch it a little more you come to realize that that's just the backdrop for the real show. So it's another good one to look into.

And my last suggestion is going to be two shows, which even though remarkably different aesthetically, have a lot of similarities, probably due to the fact that they were both directed by the same person. Ghost Hound and Serial Experiments Lain are both weird cerebral forays into some of the nether-realms of science fiction, linking real world concepts, from psychology, quantum physics, etc, into the plots of their story. The end result is an oddly compelling completely unique series of plot points that you'll probably not be able to see coming before they hit you. And I can't suggest either highly enough.

There's also FLCL... which on the surface is nowhere near a serious anime, BUT underneath all the silly action and over the top-ness there's a theme of maturity. It really is a great anime (and short being only 6 episodes) that you shouldn't pass on because it's "silly"

Ergo Proxy, great series, with a good twist, set in the future, what's not to like?

Anyway don't watch anime in dub if you don't want weird exagerated american voice acting.

You know what.

I'd also toss Outlaw Star on the pile. It's not as serious as GitS, but it's got a solid overarching plot, some brilliant humour (much like Bebop), and, despite many animes I grew up watching that I now find terrible, still ranks as one of my favourite series of all time.

Let's see...

Aside from what's been mentioned already, there's gunslinger girl, and Haibane Renmei, though given what you've said I'm not sure you'd like either.

Both take themselves very seriously, but they're still full of children at the end of the day.

Haibane Renmei is completely non-violent, and can best be described as a metaphor about life, death and religion.

Gunslinger girl is... A series about cyborg child assassins. The premise sounds incredibly dubious, and certainly the reasoning behind why all the cyborgs are girls no older than 13 or so is quite... Strained.

As far as the manga it's based on goes, the author definitely went off the deep end towards the end (in pretty much the most predictable way possible given a japanese author who created a series about young girls - It's totally not helped by the fact that this author was already known for creating lolicon... Still, the anime and earlier parts of the manga manage to avoid anything like that.)

Those issues aside, the series takes itself very seriously. Much of it is an exploration of what the implications are of a fairly dubious government agency secretly training cyborg assassins whose loyalty depends in large part on severe brainwashing and a psychological dependency on their handlers.

If you can get past the premise itself, it's certainly one of the best serious animes i've come across.
It contains no stupid jokes, no obvious fanservice (not of a sexual nature, anyway), and treats the moral issues surrounding it's premise pretty much as you would expect from a government agency which seems to operate on the principles that 'the ends justify the means'.

Still... Given what you've mentioned there's still a fairly large chance you won't like it.
But I figured it was worth mentioning.

Stick with Trigun. It might start off as kinda goofy, but it does become more serious and much darker.

I also suggest Neon Genesis Evanelion (it has a few weird anime faces/heads at the begining but those go away pretty quick) and Blue Gender. Both of those are really good and serious, though they are pretty dark.
