It's a known fact that starcraft 2's story will be in 3 parts, with 2 more expansions to be released in the following years.
I want to buy starcraft 2 but I don't want to be forced a year or so from now to pay 60 dollars or loose the ability to play online/people to play online with.
They did this with Warcraft 3, if you did not buy Frozen Throne when it came out you basically were left with the few people that were in the same situation, while the vast majority "upgraded".

Will this happen with this game? I seriously think it will.I don't want to give Blizzard my money now only to be left with the choice of either giving them more money to keep enjoy multiplayer or be left out of the sc2 community.

Do you think will happen?Am I being paranoid?

Your best bet is to just wait for the battle chest they'll release in however many years it takes them to finish the third one.

I think the expansion packs are going to be 40 dollars (or so) not 60 and I think there is a chance of the expansions being purely singleplayer which would mean that you'd still be able to play with eachother.

Unless they play the greedy card.

The singleplayer campaign alone is worth it anyway, in my opinion.

Pretty sure I heard somewhere that the expansions will be single player while the multiplayer will be updated for everyone. Although I could be wrong.

I originally thought against buying Starcraft II because of this "scam" campaign many companies have been implementing...
Release the game in one-third installments to get maximum cash...
Although I did end up buying Starcraft II.
Partly because I got into the beta and loved it, and the campaign is immensely well done.
I was anticipating a half-ass campaign that would end quickly and leave everyone waiting for the next installment. Well, the campaign was clean, polished, lengthy, and intense.
I'm eagerly awaiting the other two installments, knowing that they'll probably be worth all $60 of the dollars I'll be paying.
Although many think they'll only be $40, in which case they're much more worth it than I initially thought.

It's true, no one will play Wings of Liberty when the expansions come out. This is the world we live in ah ah ah, and these are the hands we're given.

That would be the cheapest bet, but not the best :D . I can't imagine getting into the game years and years after the first release. Even after the beta, when the game was first released, there were quite a few people that could hand your ass to you.

Unfortunately the only way I see is to buy SC2 now and see if you think the coming parts will also be worth buying. I'm not too thrilled about having to "buy the game three times", especially since I basically play only the campaign. I wish you could get them a bit cheaper if you own the previous one(s).

If you really wanted to buy Starcraft 2, You would've done so already, simple as that. Since you haven't, I am sure you can wait until they release the expansion followed by the price drop. Waiting for the Battlechest will take a looooong time.

I suggest you wait. Unless you really want to play SC2, but like I said; If you really wanted to play it, you would've bought it already.

+1

I'm pretty sure everyone has/will have access to the same multiplayer. I can't remember a quote or anything, but I also don't remember being pissed off at the multiplayer for that reason, and that would have REALLY pissed me off, so I'll go with that

They've been doing it with WoW too. Everyone who didn't buy the expansions was left on their own without the strange new races and content.

...I have to listen to that right now.

If you have a burning urge to pick it up, go for it. Blizzard is usually quite good at not forcing you to purchase xpacs if you don't want. You could still be playing WoW on the original game if you never wanted to level past 60. All you'll really be missing out on is alternate single-player campaigns (and a few units in MP I believe?). Nothing game breaking by any means.

If you are worried about being scammed or something just wait till the battle chest comes out inevitably , in 3-4 years.

I'm not a huge RTS fan, and that said I've enjoyed SCII; I haven't beaten the game yet, but I generally take forever to work my way through single-player games. I do have to agree with above posters that it's a really well done campaign though. I am terrible at the MP as I don't know the optimum build order, etc..., and so I generally don't muck around in that very much as it's not fun for me to get steamrolled by someone who is incredible at the game.

Starcraft has built a really strong and loyal fanbase, the type that are sure to buy the game on its release day. Considering the fact that players of the first Starcraft had to wait more than 10 years to play SC2, it's easy to understand why that would be a game to buy on its release date.

I am sorry if I didn't understand certain peoples financial situations or perhaps that others are much more patient when deciding to buy a game, but SC2 is one of those games where you save up years before it comes out in order to build the rig that can play it.

P.S. I really thought you were going to whip out a really good point involving the cost of a computer that could run it in the first place. The price of the game is small compared to the computer.

EDIT: Sorry I strayed off topic. Whether you decide to buy it now or later won't matter too much. The Starcraft community is strong and I am sure you will find people to play with whether you have the newest expansion or are running the core game.

For another post on topic, Blizzard still supports Diablo 2 without the expansion. They're segregated from players with it, though people still climb the ladder just fine without it.

I am rather pissed off with Starcraft 2. I bought the game solely because of the singleplayer and the story, and what do they do? First off they make it with one third the missions that Starcraft had, secondly, they made Kerrigan human in the very first part of the "trilogy", even before the Zerg missions. What are the Zer-missons going to be? Prequels?
