Serious question regarding consoles.

Now, before I go any further, I will begin by saying what this thread is NOT.

It is NOT:
An attempt to start a flame war
An attempt to troll
An attempt to see what I can get away with.

This is an honest, serious and straightforward question. I am thinking of getting a console, but I'm not sure which to get. My mates are about half and half on each console, so it's not a question of who else has one. As far as I can see

XBOX Pros -
Easier modification (new hard drive etc)
Cheaper to buy
Cheaper games
More simple to connect to internet (plug and play by the sound of it)
Better games. (In my eyes, this is not the point I'm asking to be debated. I know what games I like, please don't try to convince me otherwise)
XBOX Cons
RROD
More expensive interconnectivity (assuming I'm paying for a gold account so I can actually play with people, instead of a silver account)
Online community is regularly slated for being a bunch of pre-pubescent... hang on, you've read the same stuff I have on this
Have to re-learn a controller set up (I grew up with a ps2-stylee double-joystick joypad)
Owned by Microsoft (but this could be overlooked)

PS3 Pros
fewer problems having to result in returning the console for a prolonged period
Familiar control setup
good games (A few exclusives that I wouldn't mind, compared to Xbox exclusives that I actually found myself waiting to be ported to PC and never happened)
Free interconnectivity
Regular patches (not sure if XB has this or not, if it does, this point is irrelevant)
Online community usually beats on the dooshbag who is mic spamming

PS3 Cons
More expensive console
More expensive games
Can't modify it (internally anyway)
can be difficult to get to connect to the internet

Now, please can you give me anything that would convince me either way?

First what do you mean by modify because if you use a different hard drive or a different dvd rom in it you will get banned from XBL.

Secondly I would say ps3 as it has the better controller IMO.

EDIT: Better controller because built in rechargeable battery that you can run of the ps3 with the usb cord and it seems to be less iffy as to rather it will turn on or not.

While the PS3 is more expensive , you don't have to pay to play online , so eventually it will be cheaper , although the 360's online service is arguably better .

Another pro for the PS3 is that is the best Blu-Ray player on the market , so if you have HDTV , or plan to get one , the BD is somethng you have to consider .

Also, you're used to the PS controller , so you're probably also familiar with some PS games (Rathcet and Clank , MGS , etc) and you'll be more used to the PS3 controller .

Also , if you have a PSP , you will be able to connect it to the PS3 and do some cool stuff.

Alot of those points are wrong, PS3 and 360 games cost the same for one.

360 games do get regular patches. Actual firmware updates for the 360 are far more rare than those for the PS3.

I've never dealt with switching from analog sticks on the bottom to analog sticks staggered so I can tell how hard that'll be. You'll get used to it quick enough I believe.

Red Ring probably won't trouble you, all online communities are flooded with annoying kids in the prime of their popularity and maintain a fair number forever (additionally, I've had rather few annoying kid trouble on Live; I can only really recall five or so in my two years experience), $50 for a year of Live Gold shouldn't bother you too much. Two less steak dinners just about covers that.

In conclusion: if you want the 360 games get a 360. Why spend more money only to deprive yourself?

It basically comes down to what games you would prefer to play. The 360 has resolved a lot of its technical problems so that shouldn't really be an issue anymore. Hope that helped somewhat :S

PS3 connecting to the internet is just as easy as the 360, and you don't have to buy a $100 wireless adapted if you want online play without having a Ethernet plug in near your Xbox.

Plus, developers are getting used to Blu-Ray and making better games. If you gave it another year like the 360 had, I bet it will have a much better collection of games.

But I'm not sure about the second one. So I think the 360 is a good choice if you want to make sure you'll like it. There's so much so chose from.

Well, triggers are nice. But, to be honest, it'll really come down to three things
1) Which controller you're most comfortable with
2) Which has more games that'll appeal to you
3) Whichever one just appeals more

Both consoles are pretty balanced really. The 360's modularity isn't all that much of a strong point, unless you want to take full advantage of taking your profile and saves over to a mate's house without lugging the whole console, that's about as useful as it gets unless you plan on buying a new hard-drive. The cost of XBL isn't that large, so while annoying it won't cancel out the price difference for a few years, depending on what type of console you got. Xbox does get updates too, incidentally. Oh, and you can connect it to a computer to share music and stuff, though whether that's really all that useful is questionable.

360 is noiser, I personally like the hum it makes but that's entirely personal, and RROD isn't too common with the later release boxes.

Just go with whichever one you prefer at gut-instinct and based on games library, they both have reasons to make you glad you chose it.

Also you can Upgrade the PS3 hard drive with any SATA 2.5" Hard drive you want. So while Xbox limits you to 120GB the PlayStation can easily go up to 320GB (what i found on a quick Yahoo search... may have bigger ones out there)


Also Getting connected to the internet isnt that hard... just go to Connection settings, Select Wireless or Wired (now ill describe wireless form here on out cause that's what I always do), Select the Wireless source, Put in Security code, Verify connection, and then your on the net.....



Also I picked up SOCOM confrontations Wednesday, and noticed that games took a 10 dollar drop, With the Bluetooth mic the game cost 59.99 and without the mic it was 39.99.... On release. I think Dead space was like 49.99 as well.

Trust me, it takes about an hour or two to get used to the new controller, I still play my PS2 often and effortlessly switch between them.

£40 (im in Europe) a year is pretty much nothing for the gold account, and considering Xbox games are generally cheaper than their PS3 equivalent, that breaks the cost pretty much even.

The idiots of Xbox live are quite rare (for me at least, perhaps its luck), and if it does go too far you can simply unplug the microphone,

Unfortunately this is relatively difficult question to answer for pretty much everybody who doesn't own both an Xbox and PS3

My vote is for Xbox, but in the end, it's your choice.

Yeah I don't have either but after joining this forum and learning about what games are out there I think I would go with the 360 as well.

As I've said in other, similar threads before; go with the titles. You don't play consoles, you play games and so games supported should be the primary consideration above all else.

The PS3 may have more reliable hardware and the 360 a more stable OS, but Sony's whittling away the problems and Microsoft's got that 3-year unlimited warranty against the dreaded Red Ring. You may have to pay for Live, but Home isn't out and the current PSOnline is inconsistant between titles. The PS3 has Blu-Ray but the Xbox is half the price. Both consoles have HDMI and support 1080p, both have Dolby support, both have wired and wireless controllers with rumble.

In the end, the hardware is a wash in my opinion; but the software titles available will tell you which one you really want to get.

I'd say it entirely depends on the exclusives the consoles have, just like those posts above me =)

360 is doing a really good job this generation, getting a lot of games on it, stealing a lot of exclusives from PS3... the way I see it now, 360 is quantity (a lot of good games), whereas PS3 is quality (a few unique games)...

I think we have one of those rare generations where all the consoles are more or less on equal footing- Yahtzee put it best. The Wii is one of those annoying yap dogs that does cute tricks but not much else, the PS3 is a highbrow purebreed with an impressive pedigree, is strong and loyal, but doesn't do a whole lot besides be impressive (and play your DVD's). the Xbox360 is an affordable and dependible mutt- not as nice as the purebreed, stronger then the yap dog, occasionally keels over and dies for no reason.

You forgot: "You need to buy either batteries or a battery pack for the X360 controller" as a con and "Doesn't require batteries" as a pro for the PS3.

Also, you can upgrade the hard drive on the PS3. It's an optional, non-stock improvement of the console. Personally, I count that as a modification.

EDIT: I forgot this bit... and to be fair, I'm including it. After all, I'm not a fanboy.

The PS3 is a bit of a power hog. When it's in standby, it uses less power than any of the other three systems (yes, even the Wii). But when it's in full use, it's a massive drain. It definitely shows up on your electricity bill, is what I'm saying.

Tough choice. If you want to go Blue-Ray and have a good HDTV get the PS3.

If you don't you might defently want to consider the 360 especially if a lot of your friends have the 360. I almost find the 360 being a item of social status at most places (work and school)
