It is all about the games. What system has the games you want now and what system has a list of upcoming games you want.

I have a 360 and I can tell you from personal experience after using the PS controller for many many years there was hardly any adjustment period getting used to the new control scheme. Infact I prefer it over the PS2 controller (that was my big concern when I switched sides).

And on the subject of batteries I just went out and bought a cheap recharger (15 bucks at walmart) and a 4 pack of batteries (about 10 bucks) which seemed like a better plan than dropping 40 bucks for the special one. I also have a controller with a cord (well its for the wif).

I'd vote for xbox, although I don't own a ps3 so my advice is clearly bias.

But the major xbox failing (RROD) is all but gone in later release boxes, which you'd be buying. The dashboard is about to get a whole lot better too.

Also, games being about £10 cheaper all around means that if you buy five games a year you've all but paid for live anyway. And the controller takes no time to get used to, I prefer it to my ps2.

But PS3 seems like a perfectly good console from what I've seen. I'd say xbox, but if there's games you'd really like on the PS3 then why not go for it?

well I have a PS3, and a good point is that it can do a lot of stuff that a PC can do like browsing the internet for example and you can install linux on it so you could use it like a secondary computer. But the 360 has more games, and that's a big pull.

basically the PS3 is like an expensive Swiss army knife, it can do multiple things but not as well as something developed solely for that task.

Also the games aren't really that different in price. And the PSN's use of real world currency is a tiny-itty-bitty plus.

Could be nonsense, but I heard that you pay slightly more on PS3 games for the online play, wheras 360 makes you pay for gold membership. PS3 games used to be more expensive but I think the prices have dropped to those of the 360 games by now.

No they're completely free. As far as I knew all 360 and PS3 games were $59.99. The consoles are also priced eually. More or less if I remember correctly
360 Elite 120G and an 80G PS3 are both $400
60 Gig "PRO' and 40G ps3 are both $300
Don't let the arcade fool you you'll end paying just as much later when you do buy a HDD.
Woa! Quite glad I got a PS3 now! As for which console the OP wants, he should buy the console which will play his preferred exclusive games (so the 360).

I am actually debating weather to buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 myself, here are some notes I haven't seen here.

OK, price issues.
-PS3 starts with wifi connectivity. You need to pay $100 bucks for an adapter for Xbox, I think.
-A note on RRoD. Microsoft claims to have fixed it. The number of faulty units has dropped significantly, but there are still some overheating issues. At this point, for me, it isn't about reality, it's about the reputation. I would get too nervous playing an Xbox. I'd just constantly be worried about overheating it. I couldn't play for hours on end, perhaps not a bad thing, but not a fun thing. PS3 just gives me a peace of mind.
-PS3can play PS2 and PS1 games.

If you are going to get a 360 do not buy an arcade, it's a ripoff. Now most third party games can be found on either console. You can purchase any 2.5 sata hard drive and put it into a PS3. The PS3's online is free and as far as actually playing the games online PSN and Live are equal. It doesn't really make sense to pay for live, you could spend the 50USD you spend on a year of Live on an extra game. The PS3 will end up being the better overall value between the two consoles.

The ps3 is the better choice no matter what if you have any screen over 19inchs.
