I am actually debating weather to buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 myself, here are some notes I haven't seen here.

OK, price issues.
-PS3 starts with wifi connectivity. You need to pay $100 bucks for an adapter for Xbox, I think.
-A note on RRoD. Microsoft claims to have fixed it. The number of faulty units has dropped significantly, but there are still some overheating issues. At this point, for me, it isn't about reality, it's about the reputation. I would get too nervous playing an Xbox. I'd just constantly be worried about overheating it. I couldn't play for hours on end, perhaps not a bad thing, but not a fun thing. PS3 just gives me a peace of mind.
-PS3can play PS2 and PS1 games.
Umm, no. All Ps3's can play Ps1 games, but I think they've discontinued Ps3's with Ps2 compatability. Why? No idea.
Actually, you just have to download a thing for free and you can play PS2 games.
Where?

That would be news to me as well, and it'd be a big benefit for PS3 owners that Sony really should publicise more if it's legitimate.

I know back-compat works kinda that way on the 360; insert the Xbox1 disc, the system looks online to see if a compatability patch for it is on Live's servers, and then either loads the patch automagically or informs you that regretfully that the disc won't run on a 360. Slightly more than half my collection made it over (though some run better than others, alas) if you want a baseline on how well back-compat works.

hmm interesting points...
I'm definitely NOT getting a wii. Sure they're fun, sure they have introduced millions to gaming, but they are just a gimmick on a stick at the end of the day. You will never find me alone in my room (where most of my gaming is done) flailing like a madman trying to shoot someone or hit something, that is a promise.

I love my PC too, it's just these console exclusives and backdated games (I've still not played GTAIV) are starting to annoy me, to the point where it makes sense to get a console with whatever money is around after World Present Giving Day on the 25th of December.

I'm a 17 year old guy, I do NOT have an unending source of income. I tried WOW, and it got to the point where I felt GUILTY because I wasn't playing a game I had paid for for one month, so now I tend to avoid games etc that I have to keep on re-buying (most mmorpg's). I also will not be running the console with a widescreen HD, I'm running it on THIS (http://ak.buy.com/db_assets/prod_lrg_images/069/10380069.jpg) with a converter cable to whatever console I decide on. Also, because of this, I don't pay for electricity, so that's not such a worry at the moment.

as for price comparison... *play.com's it* GTA IV PS3- £24, XBOX £20
(http://www.play.com/Search.aspx?searchtype=allproducts&searchstring=gta&page=search&pa=search)

Assasains creed: PS3: £18, XBOX: £9.50
(http://www.play.com/Search.aspx?searchtype=allproducts&searchstring=gta&page=search&pa=search)

Now, I searched those two because those were the first 2 games that I could think of that were on both platforms, obviously if you can find somewhere where the prices are reversed I'd be glad to hear.

The main problem pools down to this: I want an Xbox 360, with Xbox 360 games, which I can play with a PS3 controller, and put it online as a PS3. This is why I needed advice...

So people would stop buying/making PS2 games. That's straight from Sony's lips. It was in a press release. You really didn't hear that? You seem so informed about Sony's dealings.

I'll say here what I said on a PSP vs DS thread: What your primary concern should be the games on the systems. Exclusives are the obvious thing that come to mind, and I think you know what to think about there. I'll only say that you shouldn't just look at the quantity of games, but the quantity of games that you like and how much those games blow your socks off.
However, also consider how the cross platform games will play out on each console. If you really prefer the DS3 to the 360 controllers, then that will benefit you in your choice of a PS3; visa versa if you can get to grips with the 360 controller. Games also play out differently in terms of graphics and processing. The PS3 indeed has more of a kick, and I've always seen 360s struggling to flip the Elephant.
Backwards compatibility is yet another point to ponder. Because you can get some great games from the older systems for dirt cheap. I saw the original Splinter Cell going for £1! I don't know how well each one works, so you might want to ask someone else about it.

If you're a big movie fan, then you'll probably also like the concept of Blu-Ray movies on your PS3 as well. As a matter of fact, the PS3 is the cheapest Blu-Ray player available. (The 360 will never have a Blu-Ray built in; that requires installing another CD-drive!)
On the other hand, if you don't give a toss about movies, then show your middle finger to the preceeding paragraph.

Why is it everyone claims only XBL has jerks and annoying ppl? Last time I checked there is no personality test to be able to buy a PS3. Or am I wrong and there is an asshole filter on the PSN?
Well, there definately isn't an asshole filter for Live! Live is one of the reasons why I left my XBrick at home. Surely if Live is infamous for this, then you'd have thought Microsoft would be implimenting a remedy to this. I'm not going to pay £40 to get yelled at and abused by pikey 10 year olds, especially when jack shit gets done about it.
£40 vs free? This is where I get off the fence. I am saving up for a PS3 because PSN is what wins it for me. Buying a PS3 will pay itself back in 2 or 3 years.
Here's VG Scott's take on another angle. [http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=258] Fuck achivements and gamerpoints. If I want a challenge, I'm creative enough to think is something difficult enough and enjoyable.

PS2 compatibility was only axed for the bare-bones 40GB version. 60GB still has it. Although what's wrong with just having a PS2 sitting next to your PS3? They're bloody cheap now.

As for the price disparity it looks like the sellers like to sell the items with slightly different pricing.

I went to amazon' UK site and TA4 for the PS3 was actually slightly cheaper than the 360. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_/278-2141310-4938430?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=grand+theft+auto+4&x=0&y=0

Oh and for the record no ps3 games are region locked.

I was playing time splitters just yesterday on my 60GB, so we can stop this rubbish right now!

Bzzzt, sorry. In Australia, no version of the PS3 has backwards compatibility with PS2 games. I have the recently released 80gb model with Dualshock 3 controller and cannot play PS2 games. My PS2 is broken - memory card slot one no longer functions. I'm not going to replace obsolete hardware for the sake of a few games, as much as I loved Silent Hill 2 and Dragon Quest 8.

And why should I have a PS2 sitting next to my PS3? That real estate is already occupied by a 360 and a Wii.

Well, I'm glad I could help as least a little. And that all makes sense, because you're pretty much downloading a virtual hard drive, and if a game doesn't need the Hard Drive, then it obviously wouldn't be any use.

Id go for the 360 because of three reasons. 1: Nearly every game on it has online play, Updates and DLC come frequently and please don`t listen to "oh XBL is full of drunken fratboys" sure some of them will be but from what I have heard it is better than playing with 10 year olds.

2: There seem to be a lot more exclusives coming to the 360 and some of the originally planned exclusives for the PS3 are also coming to the 360 like FF13 and even the developers of MGS4 hinted it might be coming to the 360.

3: Backwards comptabilty I don`t know whether (sp?) or not you have a original xbox but most of the games are compatible some are even able to download onto it but there are some gems on the original xbox such as Psychonauts,Knights of the Old Republic and Fable but from what Ive read and heard the PS3 has some awkward backwards compatiblity I may be wrong though.

The only major con of the 360 is its hardware issues but most of the stuff has been fixed and even if it does break you could probaly return it to the store and get a brand new one.I will admit though the PS3 is an alright machine I dislike it but I will give it that but it is on you my friend its what you want.

In my opinion, the choice comes down to the games, not the console. When you look at the games, I think the choice becomes the 360 because there is a much larger library of games to choose from both on discs and downloadable from Xbox Live. Plus, most of the best games from original Xbox are backwards compatible with the 360 without having to worry about which model of console you have (unlike the PS3 where only certain models are backwards compatible with PS2). As far as controllers go, the Xbox 360 controllers are not too hard to get used to. They are much more comfortable and easier to use than the original Xbox ones were. If you get an Elite or Halo 3 edition Xbox made in the last year or so, you shouldn't have trouble with RROD, especially if you lay the console on it's bottom and not on its end (never stand a DVD loading console on it's end, it's bad for all of them).

Unless you are especially wanting to play most of the games that are PS3 exclusives (a very short list), I would get a 360.

Whilst I do admit that the XBox is probably the console I want/need, I can't help thinking:

£219 for a xbox elite (120Gb)
£309 for a PS3 (80Gb with 1 game)

Xbox online (Gold)- £39 per year, works out as a little more than 10p per day
PS3 online (free)

so basically I get 2 and a bit years before the money spent on the Xbox gets more than I spent on the PS3. Assuming that games are on average £5 more expensive on PS3, I would probably get about 6 games in the first year or so, meaning the Xbox is better value for the first three years. Then I could buy 8 more games on the PS3 per year :/

Saying that, I'm starting to think the 360 is probably the best idea... Now, bearing in mind I'm from the UK, where would be the best/cheapest place to get a 360/games?

Amazon sounds like a good idea if you order online. (Some PS3 games seem to actually be cheaper on Amazon.)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_/026-4504776-5539617?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=Mercenaries+2&x=0&y=0

A for your hard drive size thing honestly for something like 58 pounds (converting from this american site. [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145235]) you could slap a 400gb hard drive in a ps3.

120gb's is really nothing when you consider the fact that the NXE (Next major Xbox update) will allow you to essentially dump any 360 game to the hard drive. Lets say you have five games all on dual layer dvds which usually top out at 9gbs. If you dump those five games you will have eaten up about 45gbs of space! It gets worse if one game just happens to be multidisc like Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey both of which are 4 discs. Basically you could guess that those two games alone would eat around 72gb's give or take a few.....
