This thread just put the lyrics "Its the end of the world as we know it" in my head, and I really want to listen to it know, but I don't know who sings it. Bugger.
it's by R.E.M.
Cool, I'll probably impulse buy it on iTunes.

We are pretty far away from the middle of the milky way. I don't see how it can destroy the Earth at all.

Man Science is so fucked up sometimes. I remember when I learned that we really didn't understand gravity at all. There are those forces that are exclusive to our dimension, light, and magnetism are good examples. Gravity on the other hand... no so much.

It is said that a black hole is a huge object that exists only in the 1st dimension (a single point in 3 dimensional space) and its gravity carries over through all dimensions.

Anyways take a look at this montage of NASA simulations.

I particularly love the ones that show galactic collisions and collisions between to black holes. Freaking nuts.
I think what your referencing is a part of String Theory. Part of the theory delves into the reasons why gravity may be so weak, something that's irked physicists for years. For example, a small fridge magnet applies more local force to a small metal ball than the gravity from the entire earth. String theory (at least one or so variants of it) says that our universe, made up of four dimensions (highth, width, depth, and time), exists parallel to many other universes all of which dwell in a higher-dimensional space known as a membrane or "the brane". To give you an image to go by, think of our universe as a single sheet of paper (two dimensional, for our purposes). Now, place that sheet vertically in a three dimensional box. Then place other sheets, aligned with ours, in the box in a parallel line. This is how they believe the "multi-verse" is organized. It is also believed that gravitons, particles thought to cause the force of gravity, aren't tethered to our universe like all other matter is and can thus travel between universes into the brane. This would explain why gravity is so weak, as the particles that cause it exist in this universe for short periods of time. Why they're not tethered gets even stranger. In string theory, all matter in the universe is made up of infinitesimally small, one dimensional strings of energy. These strings are constantly oscillating, the frequency of which determines what kind of matter it can form into. Each string has two ends. Matter in our universe have open-ended strings, meaning that each end is tethered to our universe. Gravitons, however, have closed ends, meaning they aren't tethered to our space and can freely pass from one universe to another. All of this has led more physicists into believe that black holes may offer a pathway to the brane or possibly another universe. With such a vast concentration of gravity in such a minuscule area, they could very well tear a hole in space-time. As cool as that is, it's a moot point as nothing could traverse that opening without being destroyed by the immense gravitational tidal forces created at the black holes singularity. Still, it's cool to speculate about.

Kinda went off topic there, apologies. Also, I didn't make this stuff up. It's real science.
