I don't even know what to say that'll accurately portray how angry I am. Today my SEVENTH Xbox 360 has just died. I've been with the 360 and PS3 very early on but there's one GLARING difference between the two. I've had SEVEN 360's die on me, and the same PS3 has sat on my shelf. 6 of those 360's all died within 5 months. It's not like I played them 24 hours a day in a hot room, my room is always very cold and I really don't play the 360 that often compared to PC.

I called up MS to have my 360 repaired or whatever hoping they'd make this right but no, they want me to pay for the repairs. The repairs for an E74 error being the solder came loose on a chip for the video out, so 100 bucks for that. After seven xbox 360's died on me I don't think I can honestly say I feel like I need to pay for the service. I have a over 11 consoles and all of them I treat very well.

I don't mean for this to come off as a hate rant but I'm just so angry that I've gone through so many and I've seen others use their unit FAR more and had less or NO problems. All my consoles put together haven't broken down as much as this one specific console. And to rub salt in the wound, not 2 months ago my second original Xbox died on me.

TL:DR: My seventh Xbox 360 has died, they refuse to cover it for free and they want me to pay 100 bucks to fix it. No other console has died on me or needed service as much as my 2 Xbox1s and my SEVEN 360's.

I gotta ask you guys how many have you had die on you? Have you had trouble like this with any other console/device? What would you do in this situation?

I had 3 die on me then I went and bought myself a PS3. Never looked back since.

To be honest I don't know a single person who hasn't had the 'red ring of death' at some time on their '360. I don't know how the newer models perform in terms of reliability but the older models were junk...

7? Damn, that's some bad luck right there. I got an Elite version about a year and a half ago, and it's worked fine for me.

Wow. I got one almost a year and a half ago as well. Well, I should say that my brother did

So far, so good. I might be getting a new one when I go off to school though

The only time I've ever had a system failure is when my little brother kicked my 360 when it was on its side....so yeah it became shit, but my new Xbox is fine and I've had it for two and a half years now so.....you've just hit a bad string of luck

That's quite interesting, we've had an Elite for about 2 years and it's been fine. However, as of recently, on very random occasions it tends to turn red for a few minutes but then goes right back to being a functioning Xbox 360 Elite. Or at least that's how I think of it, from what my brother has told me. Don't really play it that much, hate the controller, but my brother typically plays whenever he get's the chance. This is the second time it's happened so we're worried that it may be on it's final legs. ...after 2 years. That, or our Xbox is suffering a sorta Dr. Jekll and Mr. Hyde scenario.

I don't really trust the Xbox consoles that much, to be honest. Our first Xbox only lasted about 3 or 5 months. Meanwhile my PS2 is about 9 or 10 years old. We have a damaged input cable so we can't see anything, but aside from that it still works just fine.

I have a launch xbox 360 and an xbox 360 elite.

Surprisingly the launch xbox 360 has yet to die on me a single time, whereas the elite has died 3 times, twice due to the red ring of death, and once because the graphics card burned out. The second one was not covered under warranty, even though it's entirely microsoft's fault that this thing is such a piece of junk.

Honestly, if my xbox 360 had died on me 7 times I'd just take it and throw it through a window at Microsoft's Headquarters.

You're doing something wrong. I hate to sound like a jerk, but 7 failed consoles isn't bad luck, and most people actually don't have problems with the 360 like you hear. Myself and my 4 best friends have all had 360s for a combined total of 19 years, and we've had 3 of them break between us, and one of them broke because it was knocked off a desk while it was on and the cd drive stopped working.

A couple of things that you might not think will fuck up a 360 but will, at least in our experience: is actually laying the console flat. Several of it's air vents are underneath the 360, which makes the hot air pool under it and heat it up. Poor design, but the slim doesn't have any vents under it so at least they're learning. Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem but I had mine for two years standing upright, moved to college and laid it flat and it broke in under 3 months. The other thing, don't stand it upright in tight space or run it next to another console that's running. Also causes the hot air to pool and heat it up. That's how my friend lee broke his, RRoD. It sounds like you don't intend to buy another, but if you do try this and I don't think you'll have problems.

If you're already standing it upright with several inches of room to either side: then I have no idea how your luck is so poor. I've never heard of someone who went through more than 3 of them, and even with that many, everyone I know broke it once by knocking it over or dropping it.

Update: They've denied me the repairs twice, they say I'm out of warranty and have to pay to pay to have it fixed. Here's the broken english email "Dylan" wrote to me.

Xbox Support:
I do understand where your coming from there, since I am too is a paying customer. If only I can provide you of a much better offer, I would. However, as much as I can give is the standard repair offer for out of warranty consoles. I hope you understand. For realtime support, you may also contact our Phone Support Team.

Why would you get on getting Xboxes if they keep on dying? I don't get that. Once mine broke, I sold the thing (Obviously I said it was broke) and never looked back.

I had a release 360 for 3 years without RRoD, the graphics card eventually burned out, and then I replaced it 2 and a half years ago and haven't had a prob since. My friend Ben had a release 360 for 5 years, never RRoD, although his harddrive started to burn out at the end. then he bought a slim. My friend Jon had a release 360, his friend knocked it off a desk when it was running. He replaced it and that hard-drive died. He replaced that one and had no issues. My friend Eddie has had one for 3 or 4 years and never had any issues. My friend Mary has had one for 3 years, never had any problem. My friend Lee had one RRoD, and that was because he had it sitting in a tight space with only about a half an inch on either side. No problems since. We all play 360 almost religiously. We've played together for 10-15 hours a day on weekends before.

Perhaps you should either:

(a) don't leave your console on for long periods at a time, or
(b) find some way to increase airflow around the console while it's on

RRoD's are mainly caused by overheating. So you should at least take reasonable steps such as not leaving your console running in a confined space.

EDIT: for the record, I bought a used 360 from a friend, it RRoD'd about a year later. But since I got it fixed 3 years ago I haven't had any problems. And it was one of the earlier generation ones.

I've never had a console die on me. I had a GPU die in my last computer, though. That's when I learned about cleaning out the dust bunnies INSIDE the heatsinks.

Anyway, my PS3 Slim which I bought within a couple weeks of them first being released has finally started giving me issues. The BluRay lazer seems to be having issues. I don't know if it's diry, or broken, but sometimes it works ok and sometimes it doesn't. I was running AC:B fine for a few weeks and all of a sudden crapped out on me. I couldn't get it to run again since (haven't tried much, TBH).

The good news is, there's kits for doing an at-home repair if I really need to for less than shipping it to Sony.

The system has been in the same place, never moved, well ventilated, and along with the other 10 consoles on my shelf, they are well taken care of. The only consoles to have ever broken on me are 2 original Xboxs, seven XBox 360's and 1 big PS2 which I could have fixed by turning a gear in the disc drive.

Standing the system up is not a fix, I know 2 people who've lost games and xbox disc drives from having it stood up. It sounds like, laying down, or standing up it's likely to fail on me if I chose to get this replaced.

It's on for maybe 7 hours a week, I only play console games when friends are over.

That is just very bad luck I'd say.

I had a Arcade awhile back, I bought a Hard Drive for it, and it did die, but not for like a year and a half. Even then I didn't play all that much. Now I have the new slim model and, although I still don't play that much, I've had no trouble with it. Maybe buy a slim?

My Xbox 360 was the only console I've ever had break.

my 360 has broken once. Of course, the one time it broke was THREE FUCKING DAYS after its warranty expired.

I've never had any problem with my xboxes.

I've only owned then for just about 2 years but I/my mates use to live in the tropics and play my pro for about 48 hours over the weekends (I had 10 days on 4 days off). It was on pretty much all the time when I wasn't at work and it was in a hot room.

My current slim is in a closed cabinet and I play it for 8 hour stretches on a semi regular basis (not to mention my girlfriend's playing habits).

That said my PSx was still working after 8 years until my sister knocked water onto it and didn't bother to wipe it down or let it dry, then turned it on. She was really ignorant of how to treat electronics and I regret selling it to her.

My PS2 is still going 7 years later.

I just have decent luck.

I've never had a console die on me. Even hand-helds.
